  1. Hi All,

I just captured my video from a VHS tape using Canopus ADVC110 and WinDV capture software. I have Sony Vegas 7, but I didn't like the way it capture my video. It look like it made it worst. So I tried WinDV and the capture results looks much better.

Now I'm trying to figure out, which filters do I apply to cleanup this sample video I included below.

    www.lwintegrationtest.com/birthdaycakevideo.avi

I very familiar with fixing levels in Photoshop, but I have no clue how to correct the color balance in video. I also see noise in this clip, which I believe is coming from the VHS heads. Then I see the bad video at the bottom.

Which filters do I need I need?
    VirtualDub or AVISYNTH?

    Thanks.

Colormill is a pretty good colour correction filter for virtualdub, which can also be used in avisynth with a little effort. Personally I prefer the avisynth filters PeachSmoother and Convolution3D over most virtualdub noise removal filters. It is also worth noting that depending on the type of filtering you are doing, avisynth can be 2 - 3 faster than virtualdub

What guns1inger said. I normally use VD Mod, as I like how it manages the audio better, but otherwise they work about the same.

The noise at the bottom is normal with VHS captures. It's apparently from the video heads, referred to as 'head switching noise'. Unless it is much more than a 1/4 inch, it's not normally visible on a regular TV as it ends up in the hidden overscan area of the screen, out of sight.

Some VD filters can be found at: http://neuron2.net/ or http://www.hlinke.de/Home_e/Vdub-Filterlist/vdub-filterlist.html

It might seem "difficult" at first glance but it really isn't once you get used to it.

Thanks for the guide FulciLives! This just may work except for a couple of things.

    1. I downloaded the current version of Virtual Dub Mod 1.5.10.2 and it crashes during startup. I get a Virtualdub program failure- exception occurred in module kernel32.

Any ideas what maybe causing this on Windows XP Pro SP2?

    2. I located a copy and installed Convolution3d.dll 1.0.0.1 not sure if this is the correct version (How can I tell if I have the YUY2 version or YV12 version)?

    3. I have Avisynth 2.5 installed but don't know if I can run it by itself.

Let me know if you can help.

    Thanks.

The newest version of VirtualDubMod is 1.5.10.2 build 2542 (I'm using 2540 myself) and here is the link to download it: CLICK HERE

I'm not sure why you got an error like you did ... unless you didn't install properly. It does come with a readme file I think.

Try downloading and installing, VirtualDubMod_1_5_10_2_All_inclusive.zip and if that doesn't work for you then download and unzip (to the same folder) the file called, VirtualDubMod_1_5_10_2_b2542.zip which I think is just an "update only" file for the first file.

As for Convolution3D you can always find the newest version HERE and it looks like the most up-do-date current version (the YUY2 version) is the file called, convolution3d_25_dll_20030422 ... notice that the only other Convolution3D file for download has "yv12" in the file name. You want the YUY2 version.

The newest version of AviSynth is 2.5.6a and can be found HERE
You want to download the file called, "Avisynth_256.exe"

After you do all this might be a good idea to reboot the computer.

    Hi mlong30

You can Colour Correct in Vegas 7 very well. This is my preferred method........

Find a scene with something that is supposed to be white (but isn't.) Place the full-up colour corrector filter (not the "simple" one) on the clip in question. Select "video scopes" under the VIEW menu. Select the waveform monitor and place it in the "composite" mode. Notice where the object that is supposed to be white appears in the waveform monitor, it should be somewhere near the top of the scale.

Using the "high" colour wheel in the Colour Corrector dialog box, move the marker around until the area on the waveform monitor that is displaying the white object "nulls out." In other words, where that horizontal portion of the white object on the waveform monitor becomes the "thinnest." You'll see what I'm talking about when you do it.

You can also set the black balance using the vector scope. Select a portion of the clip that has the most blacks, or near blacks, in it. Select the vector scope and select "magnified" (where it usually says, "normal") Now using the low colour wheel, move the marker around until the fattest portion of the "blob" is centred in the vector scope window.

You can play with the "mid" wheel and set it to suit your taste, or perhaps just not touch it at all. Now, go back to the waveform monitor and select "luminance", find the brightest section of the clip and then adjust the "gain" control in the colour corrector filter until the white object sits at "100%" and you're all set. If there are some black portions in the clip, then adjust the "offset" in the filter until they display just above "0". Do this BEFORE you adjust the gain of the white object to 100%.

Of course, use a calibrated video monitor to make any final decisions about colour correction adjustments.

I just redown loaded 1_5_10_2_ALL and even 10_1. They both crash during startup. I have Microsoft V.6 and MS .NET 2005 installed on my laptop. I'm getting following error when I look at the stack and assembly trace.

Unhandled exception at 0x003f570d in VirtualDubMod.exe: 0xC0000096: Privileged instruction.
    Disasembly where it crashes

    Call Stack
    003F570d()
    ntdll.dll!7c910732()
Frames below my be incorrect and/or missing, no symbols loaded for ntdll.dll

Has anyone see this type of error?

Also, is there another way I can use Avisynth 2.5, from command line, or frameserver to vegas 7, or just preview the results? Virutal Dub 1.6 works great! But for what ever reason Virutal DubMod just crashes, and I don't know how to use Avisynth with Virutal Dub.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.
