I have downloaded several Xvid Avi to my computer. They are all good quality sound and vision and play perfectly on my computer. When I try to burn them to DVD using NeroVision4 so I can watch them on TV, the sound and vision get more and more out of synch as the program proceeds. Nero tech support suggested decompressing the sound of the source AVI using VirtualDub, which I did, but the resulting DVD still drifted out of synch as it progressed. Nero Support said "its just something that happens.Sorry!".
There must be some way to burn AVI to DVD without losing s/v synch. Should I abandon Nero? Is there some other thread that explains in idiot terms what programs to use and procedure to follow?

NeroVision is rubbish. Try ConvertXtoDVD, as it is more reliable with VBR MP3 (the most likely cause of your problem).
However to do it correctly takes time, and even then, sometimes it cannot be fixed. The simple answer is don't download garbage.Read my blog here.

When you 'decompressed' the audio with VirtualDub, what was your method? VD will tell you immediately if you have MP3 VBR audio. If so, you save it out with full audio processing as a WAV audio file. Then you can add that back in or convert it to a different CBR format, or just add it separately into your encoder, along with your video. I use VD Mod for WAV conversion as I prefer how it handles audio compared to the regular VD.
Gradual sync loss is usally the result of the audio and video being different lengths. VBR audio is a common cause of this. It will play fine as a AVI, but not after encoding to MPG.
If VBR isn't the problem, then the video may have missing frames or other damage. PAL<>NTSC conversions can also cause sync loss with many encoding programs if not handled properly.
But I would also recommend ConvertXToDVD. It handles VBR audio fairly well, also PAL<>NTSC conversions. -
I switched from Nero to ConvertxtoDVD and ALL my sync problems vanished

Thanks guys.
Some of the avi's were reported by Virtualdub as having VBR and some weren't. I converted the VBR sound by changing some values in the hex editor, then Virtualdub allowed me to decompress it. The sound was no longer reported as VBR and the avi's were all in synch but the synch still didn't survive conversion to DVD. I think the first guy was right. Nero is shit.
Anyway I've downloaded "ConvertXToDVD" and IMG Burn and am going to give it a go.
Thanks again. -
Thanks Guys. It worked!
ConvertXtoDvd did the trick, everythings in synch and I didn't need to use IMG Burn at all. The only problem I have now is that when the Dvd is played on my standalone DVD player it plays appears on my TV in a default 4:3 aspect ratio, even though it was burnt in 16:9 and plays that way on my computer. Nor do the display options on the DVD player allow me to watch it widescreen. if I select that option it just zooms in so more of the image is cropped. Any suggestions?
