I installed a Memorex DVD burner a couple of years ago and am starting to have problems. From what I have gathered, it's a driver issue that's conflicting with XP and causing it to shut down. 90% of the time the computer shuts down as it is finalizing the disc during a burn, most of the time the CD is playable. This happens while burning a CD or DVD. Sometimes it happens when I'm encoding a movie. Checked the driver and it states that it's working properly, no new updates. Any advice???

Don't know if it's related, but if the computer sits idle for a while then I try to play an mp3, or even just the computer tones will "stick" or sound like a scratched CD. If I unplug my cable internet, it clears right away.

    Thanks in advance!

It's one of those ... aint it ... been here .

I was fixing a pc that had similar issue not long ago involving someone ripping cd music dirrectly to a portable usb device ... and all hell broke loose ... read's cd's , but would nolonger burn without burn failure or lock the pc up entirely .

Reloaded the os was no good ... replaced the drive worked .

Appears to be an issue ... an aspi and usb conflict .

They now know not to rip directly to usb devices ever again ... cause I will charge them like a wounded bull next time round ... or the same thing will happen ... ms dose have some obscured info on it ... that didnt help either explain the problem ... nor did it fix it either .

In you case , the drive is getting on , and time to replace it ...

While your at it , clean all fan's ... and consider the power supply unit ... update it to 400watts or better ... you might have a heat issue when your encoding .

Last , get avgfree and update it ... run a scan on the system , just to make sure you havent got any nasty surprise hiding inside that may also cause the the problem during encoding .

Thanks for the info - what's the best way to replace the drive? I've searched for updates to my hardware but it seems that it is outdated and I'm not for sure which update is appropriate since none match my model number. Where can I find avgfree? Sorry for all the questions, I'm only semi-computer minded.

If you are using Nero Burning Rom, be sure that the option "Shut down PC when done" is not checked.

This may happen if you have a small ammount of RAM.

Anyhow, your PC details could be helpful.

I'm using Nero 6 to burn movies and iTunes to burn CD's. I'll post PC specs when I get home. I think low memory is my problem with encoding...If I'm simply copying a movie it usually works fine, but if I'm trying to make my own DVD, I get low memory warnings and it eventually stops, even if I'm just making a DVD of still pics.
