how to check for frame drops?

I captured a hi8 tape yesterday, but I just let it run and did not watch it. Today I started to capture one and noticed 10 minutes into the capturing, it had dropped 52 frames. I am using nero vision express 3.

Is there software for me to go back and look at the mpg I captured yesterday and check for frame drops?

Nope. You need to look at the log of the capture as it happens or when it completes. Once the capture is finished, the only way to tell if you lost anything is to sit and watch it, looking for jumps.
