I replaced my CD Recorder recently with NEC ND-3550a after reading the reviews online.

I am not sure what the reason is but I am able to read and write only at 2.x speed. I used Verbatim DVD+R 16x speed media. I tried all burn speeds but no difference.

I am using the Nero software that came with this Drive. It was a OEM drive not retail version as I cannot replay the DVD's I am burning.

I have not had any problems with burning or playing the media anywhere but what am I missing that is causing such low speed reads and writes. Both the drive and the media are stated to read an write at 16x speed. I ran the nero infotool and it too gives the same information.

Please tell me if you have any ideas I can use to improve the situation.

    thanks

First thing to check is whether or not your drive is running in PIO mode.

Right-click my computer and select Manage. Click on Device Manager, then open the branch called IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Double click on the Primary Controller, then click on the Advanced tab. Make sure the Transfer Mode on both channels is set to DMA if available, and the Current Transfer Mode is not set to PIO. Repeat for the Secondary Channel.

If you find that either channel of either controller is set to PIO, delete that controller form the list, and reboot your syste, Windows should reinstall the controllers when it restarts, and they should be set to DMA mode again. Repeat the checks listed above to confirm

If they are still in PIO mode, or continue to revert to PIO mode then you have a problem with the drive, the controller, or the cable.
