I just bought a VHS/DVD player recorder Emerson 2004. Want to save pics and home movies. What is life of DVD-R and how much longer will the DVD's in 8x speed be available. Will manufacterer continue to provide 8x?

8x media are already being discontinued. Since 16x media cost no more to manufacture, there is no incentive to contune production.
Your Emerson recorder will probably burn just about anything at 1x and probably will die within a couple of years like most modern electronics. I predict a power supply failure.
Don't sweat it. -
You can burn 16x at 8x, or 2x for that matter. I think they'll be selling compatible media for as long as the player lasts.
Longevity of DVDs is hotly debated, anything from a few months to centuries. Aside from buying good media to begin with, scratches are the main problem. -
The Verbatim (Mitsubishi Chemicals) and Taiyo Yuden media is "supposed" to have a lifespan of up to 100 years. That,I would say is very much exaggerating. If I look after my Verbs and TY's,I would be very happy if they were to last me 10 years.
My LG DVD writer seems to prefer 8x media and I wish they would continue to produce.16x media never comes out as good as 8x with my LG 4167B when doing advanced quality scans.~Luke~ -
Thanks for your help! I very much appreciate the info. I am very much a novice at burning these. I want to transfer home movies from VHS to DVD. thanks again, Jerry Sue
