    i have a video file in .mkv, but it's HD 720p with ac3 5.1 sound.

    how do i convert it into a regular avi xvid?

    OR

    to dvd? (but when i convert avi to dvd, i use cce)

    Start with mkvextract and see what you get out of it.

    Are you sure it's AC3 and not AAC ?

    If it is AC3, demux and put to one side, convert the video using fitcd, avisynth and CCE, and author the AC3 back in with the video afterwards.

    Latest ConvertXtoDVD supports mkv if you want to convert to DVD.
