I am aware of the region code hack - but what about its ability to play PAL DVDs on an NTSC TV?
From my understanding not all region free DVD players can do that. Most don't....

According to the specs of your LG LRY 517 it can only playback NTSC and not PAL because the tuner is NTSC. A region code hack will only enable your player to playback discs from other regions. It has nothing to do with playing PAL discs. If you wanted to play PAL discs you need a player that is NTSC & PAL. Unfortunately your player tuner is only NTSC.

Unless you bought the model that has a built in 16mb PAL converter then you'll be able to view PAL discs. Something like this from 220 electronics.

So not all 517's have the built in converter?
Let me ask you something else... is "Go Video" a good brand?
None of the major brands seem to make a pal>ntsc combo... -

I thought there was a 517 model that came from LG with the tuner built in.
This is for my parents and the reason I wanted a comb was because they have trouble understanding things... likie DVDs. and VCRs.
But having a combo restricts mny options too much.
I was looking at the Philips 5960 - they have it at best buy, I should just go with that.
Now if only I could find a VCR that keeps its composite outputs hot when its turned off...
