before i try to go headlong into the world of dvd ripping.....could i manipulate smart ripper to record the dvd at a non-dvd level? i have a somewhat restrictive hard drive size and am willing to bear the time required but cannot hold such large files.......
any help is good help

nope...better just spend some more to get bigger hdd....even right now at regular price, u can get 45 gig IBM deskstar 7200 rpm OEM for $109 at http://www.accessmicro.com
not a advertisement...but u can also search for hdd at http://www.pricewatch.com

Until you can afford the space you could try using the DeCSS version of Flask and create directly from the DVD drive. Sacrifices a little quality however (my opinion) and could be a little hard on the drive. But just recommending a temporary fix. Bigger drive is the best solution. btw, All I use is a 10 gig Maxtor 5400rpm for my stuff so it doesn't have to be huge if you can find a 10-15 gig cheap you could use that. Limited to 1 maybe 2 movies you can work on at a time this way though.
