I left my TV (non-HD, standard 32" Sony Wega CRT) and DVD player unattended for about 30 minutes. When I came back, the DVD player had gone into screen saver mode, then shut down automatically. The TV was displaying "VIDEO 1", green text on a black screen.

When I began to watch a DVD, I noticed a soft white blur across where the "VIDEO 1" text had been. It wasn't a reflection or dirt on the glass, because it disappears when the TV is off. I turned off the TV and haven't touched it since last night.

I never left it unattended like that before. Did I screw up the TV? Is there anything I can do about it? Thanks for any help.

  2. A CRT will not suffer burn-in from a 30 minute exposure.

Seriously though, Isn't burn in a thing of the past? Does it really still affect any modern displays?

Back in the early 90's I bought a fancy 27" Sony XBR Trinitron for over $1000 ('90 dollars) fed by a semi-fancy JVC S-VHS VCR. I was instructed by my company to get to South East Asia to fix a problem with two hours notice. I was gone three weeks.

Unfortunately, the TV was left on.

From then on "S-VHS" showed "burned in" green to that Triniton monitor. If you blinked, it turned pink (complementary colors). The reason was the red and blue phosphors depleated faster than green.

SONY refused to fix the problem under the extended 1 yr CRT warranty due to my actions of leaving the TV on.

This was before the recourse of the internet.

I'm not sure of their current warranty policy. I stopped buying Sony monitors except used out of warranty.

So, what could be causing what I'm seeing? There's definitely a white blur across the upper left, that doesn't seem to be going away.
