  1. Hey,

I'm a newbie and have some questions!

I downloaded a few movies that were in AVI format. My intention is to convert the avi files to dvd format (vob format) so that I can play the movies on my dvd player hooked up to my tv.

I used the latest Nero 7 Ultimate Edition with all the nesscary updates applied to convert from AVI to a DVD movie (vob format).

I used Nero Vision to create the movie and then Transcode the movie and then burn to DVD.

The first few movies I converted from avi to dvd using Nero 7 Ultimate Edition worked perfect and was able to watch with no video or audio loss.

However, there is one movie in which about the first hour the video and audio were great, but the reaminder of the movie the video was really choppy (there were blocks across the screen), almost like the DVD had been scratched but it's not scratched and eventually the dvd would freeze.

I then tried ConvertXtoDVD. Once again the first few videos I converted from avi to dvd (vob format) worked perfect with no audio or video loss at all!

The last video that I had problems with Nero 7 Ultimate Edition I had the similar problems with ConvertXtoDVD. When I converted the last movie from AVI to DVD (VOB format) and burnt the dvd using ConvertXtoDVD burning feature, I put the DVD into my standard DVD player which is hooked up to my TV.

When I played I noticed the picture and audio quality was great which was the same case with Nero 7 Ultimate Edition. However, some times thorugh out the movie I noticed the picture get choppy, as if it was scratched (blocks across the screen). Sometimes ii would freeze and once it even ejected the DVD. Eventually I was able to watch the entire movie.

Using Nero 7 Ultimate Edition I was only able to watch about the first hour as the problem mentioned above always occurred preventing me to watch the rest of the movie. At least with ConvertXtoDVD I was able to watch all the movie with some intermittent problems such as freezing, dvd being ejected and choppiness as if the DVD was scratched.

The media I'm using to burn my movies on to are either Maxwell DVD -R or Retail Plus+ -R.

I burnt several movies already and never seemed to have a problem. The only movie I had problems with was the one mentioned in this topic.

    1) What could be causing the DVD sometime to freeze, eject the DVD and is there a solution?

    2) When I played this AVI movie on my computer before converting it with either Nero 7 Ultimate Edition or ConvertXtoDVD, the movie played fine on my computer in its avi format with none of the problems in this topic. There was no freezing or choppiness in the picture.

What could be causing the problem when I convert this avi file to dvd format to cause choppiness in the picture sometimes like the dvd was scarthched and is there a solution?

    Thanks!

The dvd being ejected sounds like the standalone is ejecting the disc because it is having trouble reading the disc or playing the file. I've never seen this happen except with bad media. Although it could be a "feature" of your standalone.

I expect since both programs have similar issues with the same video file, the file is corrupt in some way. You could try repairing it, using better tools to convert it, or get a better copy.

  3. Hey Krispy Kritter,

You stated "I expect since both programs have similar issues with the same video file, the file is corrupt in some way. You could try repairing it, using better tools to convert it, or get a better copy."

What are the better tools (software) for converting?

    Thanks!

No tool works with damaged source material. Don't expect too much from stuff you "stumble on" on Internet.
Get a DVD player that plays AVI files (DivX and XviD) if you really have the Internet as a major source for your video needs. They are really cheap these days, and you can probably pick one up for what you'd earned if you'd worked instead of fighting a stubborn damaged download.

Take a look in the HOW TO - CONVERT section for avi to dvd (mpeg2). There are many tools that can be used. For the most part, none of the "all in one" tools are very good. They are popular because they are easy to use, not because of quality output.

With that said, I agree 110% with mats.hogberg. Get a cheap divx dvd player. It will save you all of the work, hassle, and time of conversion, you will get better playback quality, and you can fit more movies on a single dvd because you just burn them as data.

I'm not one of those people you see that automatically think every problem is due to media, but this definately sounds more like a media issue than anything else.

But seeing as he has not stated what media or player he is using.

Media is usually my first thought, however, he stated that he is working with multiple files and the only one of the files is having this problem.

    EDIT for grammar
