Okay I just got my new VCR today. The JVC SR-V101US. This is the VCR recommended by lordsmurf and a few other people right here on this site.

Okay, So what are some of the best settings to use when capturing video from my old VCR tapes to my computer. I will be capturing them in DV/AVI format.

A few settings I am not sure of.

Digital R3 - On or Off ......which do you recommend??? Why?

Picture Control - Auto or Edit ......which do you recommend??? Why?

Video Calibration - On or Off ......which do you recommend??? Why?

TBC or Video Stabilizer? You can't use both...at least the VCR I have won't let me. If I turn one on, it automatically turns the other off. So which one would be the best for some old tape captures?

Any help you guys could give me on these questions or beyond would be appreaciated. I just want to get the best possible video captures I can! Thanks a lot!

    Joel

    peace and safe journey!

DIGITAL R3 can add sharpness. Sometimes it just adds more noise. Sometimes it does nothing. I keep mine off. I have a detailer if I want edge enhancement (and it works better).

PICTURE CONTROL is good for removing noise. I say leave it on NORM. The NORM is AUTO, but with CALIBRATION off (turn it off!).

CALIBRATION theoretically finds the best part of the tape to play and record. In actuality, calibration tends to make video jitter on playback, and it tends to make tapes hard as hell to track when used during recording (especially if playing the tapes on another VCR, even if another JVC S-VHS VCR!). Keep it off.

STABILIZER is for controlling shaky tapes. TBC/DNR is for removing chroma noise and otherwise purifying the signal. Use either as needed. TBC will usually be used most.

And then also search the forums (CAPTURING or RESTORATION) for lots of JVC-related tips.

    Enjoy the VCR!
