My philips DVDR1000 needed a firmware update to use higher speed disks, so using the links on this site I downloaded the firmware. Unfortunatly during the instal after inserting the cdr it locked up and now shows "download" on the panel when switched on and thats it!
It did start reading the disk which was burnt using 'nero' in the way described.

So I dismanteled and removed the disk, still shows "download" and no buttons work.
That said the diagnostic tests do work if "open" is pressed at switch on. This completes the 22 tests with no problems. Yet it still goes back to "download"!!

So does anyone have a way to repair it or is the firmware gone and thats it, - big aluminium fronted hitec silver doorstop.
    Cheers

I still have my DVDR985 firmware disc here. It was one of the last ones that supposedly had ALL models covered. Worked like a charm on mine once BUT it(the firmware upgrade) wasn't for reading/writing higher speed discs.

    hi hech,
that'll be the same that has download on this site.
It should have worked as I think I did things correctly.
From your experiance could it be resurrected ?

-I'm sure a new chip could be soldered in but I won't be doing that!-

The firmware I have was for the "error message of death" that plagued the early Philips recorders. This is what is on my firmware CD-R:

    Cheers Hech,
I'll have a look whats on the disc.
Thing is the disk draw won't open to put it back in
    - probably due to no firmware - had to remove CD by totally dismantaling.
So is there anything that anyone can suggest before it goes to the big electrical landfill. ?????

As I recall there is a small opening under the front of the unit that opens the tray in an emergency. It requires a paper clip...straightened of course.

    Oh, like on a PC,
I did have look for something like that but I'll check again. thanks.

Does anyone know if the unit can be sorted out as if I can but the CD in, or a different CD with origonal firmware, will it load and work or is that it. I don't have any experiance of firmware and I'm well and truly put off now.
    Cheers

By the way just to correct myself, the firmware was from a dvdplusrw.org link not this site at all.
