  1. I have several DV tapes recorded at a recent band concert. Unfortunately, while changing tapes, my 'helper' managed to lean on the zoom control with the result that the later recordings are not filling the frame.

If this was a still image I'd crop it and enlarge back to 'normal' size. Is there any simple way of doing the equivalent with DV. Ideally, it would probably need about 50 pixels off each side.

I normally capture with Movie Maker and code with TMPEnc but I have little in-depth expertise with either. Any help would be much appreciated.

Should be rather simple to do with Virtualdub, with crop and resize (in that order).
Get the Panasonic DV codec to make VDub import DV AVI (Don't reencode it to some other format before doing this edit).

You could try VirtualDub or VD Mod. It accepts DV if you add a codec like the Panasonic DV Codec. Then in 'Video>Filters' add the 'Resize' filter and pick your new size and the filter mode.

I'm not sure about the interlace warning, as I haven't tried changing size on a DV file. DV is interlaced. VD or VDM can output DV also. But you would have to re-encode to change the size. You can leave the audio as Direct stream copy and choose DV for the video output codec.

I do all my DV editing with VirtualDub Mod, then frameserve the edited video directly to TMPGEnc encoder. Saves time and hard drive space.

  4. Thanks for the tips. Virtualdub has a 'cropping' facility but not obvious to me how to use it. Stays greyed out unless I select a fill (?) What am I overlooking . . .?

If all you want to do is crop, use the Null Transform filter.

VirtualDub can only apply cropping to a filter. As gadgetguy said, if you're not doing any filtering Add the Null Transform filter then apply cropping to that. But if you are going back to DV you have to resize the frame back to its original size. So forget the Null Transform filter, Add the Resize filter, then apply cropping to that. The cropping will be done before the resize.

You can also perform the cropping within TMPGEnc using its Clip Frame option.

If you only need to crop 50 pixels from the sides maybe you don't need to crop at all. That small amount will be hidden by the TV's overscan anyway.
