Hi guys I'm converting my Avi's with vbr audio to cbr and often recode the video to divx5 using vdubmod
Lately tho i have come across N-VOPS (packed bitstream) wich causes vdubmod to error on every frame.

What program should i use to recode my vbr audio N-VOP avi video so that i can watch them on dvd.
Is there a way to get Vdubmod to handle N-VOP video?

And out of interest why are people encoding this way? what benefits does it offer over others GMC for example

    Thanks Guys

mpeg4modifier should be able to unpack the stream for you

    Thanks Guns1inger that was quick!

Tho it did indeed unpack the avi GSPOT has confirmed this (no N-VOPS) there are still B-VOPS which I'm sure all my videos have had however V-dubmod still recognised frame errors.

Tho this file plays fine and Super can convert the whole thing fine V-dubmod cannot edit it or re-encode it?

The only other indication of difference to my other video files is a mentions of OPENDML?

Could this be why v-dubmod doesn't like it, what is openDML?

VDUBMOD Gives Error Code 100 if that helps?

VirtualDub can handle N-VOP's fine. More upto the decoder anyway. It simply has to redisplay the previous P-VOP whenever it comes across an N-VOP. Packed bitstream has nothing to do with real N-VOP's though which DivX doesn't even create.

For VDub or anything else VfW based you should be wanting packed bitstream anyway since it makes editing easier. Packed bitstream was invented to work around VfW's limitations.

VDubMod can handle ODML avi's fine to.

    Thanks celtic_druid
The origninal file is xvid open_DML N-VOP B-VOP.
Unpacked it removes the N-VOPS but is still unmanagable
So if openDML and and the ?-VOP are not my problem then what is causing VirtualDubMod to error decompressing all frames?
It suggests a decompression corruption and error code 100

The problem is your system (most likely the build of XviD being used to decode) not the file. Season 10 episode 8 wasn't all that good anyway. Episode 10 is much funnier.

Thanks celtic_druid, I un-installed the xvid codec I have Version 1.2 SMP ALFA and with that removed I can now open the video file ?????????

So with the codec installed it doesn't open in vdubmod but with it removed it does?

Running a current 1.2cvs build here without issues. You were using an older build though right?

No its the current release 2006, I re-installed and de-selected the "decode all mpeg4s" option and can now open the xvid file and re-encode divx5.2. also not having no trouble with audio sink now..?

XviD was actually updated within the last month. What I meant is that you were probably using Koepi's build from back in Feb. My last build was I think in July or August.

Should be no need to convert to DivX 5.2 for sync. There were no sync problems here with that file here.

The decode all mpeg4's option shouldn't make any difference. Just enables XviD to handle other FourCC's. Can't remember if it even effects VfW.

    Thanks again celtic_druid
Yes I was using Koepi's feb release, I could not find any newer release then that before but have found the newer release now.

I recode to divx5.2 because I can then burn it to dvd with nero which can successfuly transcode divx5 with cbr audio. Audio sync issues occur with vbr audio and other program errors occur if left with xvid.

I know i can use convertx but its not always successful either so I re-code to divx5.2.

For now it all works very well having the feb release installed with the option for xvid not to decode all mpeg4s and while the newer release would most likely not have this trouble I figure if it works don't change it.

Thanks again tho, without your help I would not have been able to understand this problem nor resolve it.

Re-encoding like that with lossy codecs to only then re-encode to DVD will cause a quality hit. Have you tried simply decoding the audio to PCM and leaving the video?

I found that re-coding a xvid with video @ 950~or so kb/s with divx5.2 @ 1000kb/s ~ or so bloats the file about 50mb, however shows no sign of loss to the video quality
I found that when leaving the audio as the extracted .wav when producing the dvd the video bitrate is forced much lower then usual? thats just my expierience, using other software like tmpgenc to convert to mpeg is much better quality because i can control the bitrate for video were in this case those features are all automatic for nero.

I guess it is the case of using the right tools for the job which nero is so often NOT
