Our DVD recorder as above) will not recognise any DVDs whether blank or pre-recorded. Can anyone suggest a solution? Please, my husband is tearing his hair out!

Does it still play CDs, both burnt and pre-recorded?

What exactly it says when it rejects recording? What you mean by "will not recognise any DVDs"

    Take a look here:

If discs were recorded on another DVD recorder they have to be finalized.

DVD Recorders make terrible players. It's always been best to save the more expensive recorder for recording and use a player to play.
Too late now but...now you know.

You can try cleaning the lens. There are guides available on how to do this. If you care you can search for them. But most likely your player needs repair. The burner may need to be replaced, but that can be a difficult job for people to do themselves without solid hardware experience.
