    Hello:

I don't intend for this to be a flame post or anything...

But I'm newly learning about video editing and such, and I'd like to know more about the pros and cons of Xvid vs. DivX. I've checked the respective websites; could I get some other links for further info? Or some personal opinions and such?

Of course, I know that both of these are MPEG-4 codecs and that Xvid is "free" and that DviX is a "something other than entirely free", but I guess what I want to figure out is, which might be better for me to spend my time learning to use and initially encoding my library of videos with.

    Thanks!

    Hi,
If you are going to look at MPEG-4 Codecs, In addition to XviD and DivX, 3ivX and Nero Digital are no slouches either and can be more readily put into a .mp4 container for PC viewing as well as portable devices like iPods, PSP's etc.

xvidencraw and ffmpeg can output Xvid in an mp4 container directly, with ffmpeg also being capable of doing audio (faac though).
