I'm going to be need to buy, burn and print via inkjet some CD-R discs for products for sale on a website. Till now, I've always been involved in DVD video and determined the Taiyo Yuden discs to be the best. Does this carry over to the CD-R too? Is there another brand with an inkjet printable face that is generally reliable for CD-R? Are some brands better than other for burning at higher speeds?

Most of the recognized brand names of CD-R have gotten so good that it is difficult to distinguish between them. For printable DVDs, however, two new developments from Taiyo Yuden and Imation are significant: printable discs that will not have the ink run if water gets on the disc. Imation calls theirs "AquaGuard" or something like that. I'm not sure what the TY name is. These printable discs overcome the last remaining criticism of ink-jet printable discs. They are more expensive than regular printable discs, but they may be worth it.

So I should be pretty good if I buy Taiyo Yuden ink jet printable CD-R? I've had great luck with them as far as their DVDs go...

You should have no problems at all. If you want the waterproof versions, you may have to dig a bit to find them.

If you are looking high speed quality and "The white printable coating on the CDR is designed to absorb ink-jet or other printer ink without smearing."
Then I think these would be worth the extra 5 cents per disc or 5 bucks/ hundred. Plus they are Taiyo Yuden with fast processing and shipping.

Taiyo Yuden has just recently come out with WaterShield version for CD-R and DVD-R which is basically waterproof and smearproof.

Can my epson R220 printer print on the "silver ink jet printable"? I always thought it had to be that white printable surface?

Ritek 52X inkjet printable white cd-rs work great for me. Taiyo Yudens are great too, I just don't like the greenish color bottom. Check out http://www.burnsmart.com/riri52xinhub.html
