  1. what's the best/fastest/easiest/free way to remove protection and extract a movie from a dvd and convert it to a format that an ipod could read?

cause my friend has an 80gb ipod, and he wants to rip some of his movies and put it in his ipod. he knew that i know how to rip/burn dvds (also removing protections) so he asked for my help. i could help him cause i only know how to rip the whole dvd, and not just the main movie. and i also don't know how to convert a dvd rip (.vob i think. not sure) to a format the apod could read (i think he said quicktime or something, not sure)

    thanks[/b]

  4. CloneDVD Mobile isn't free and in my opinion the results are among the worst I have seen from any converter.

The best results I have achieved from freeware is to rip with RipIt4Me, merge the VOBs that make up the main movie with VOBMerge and then convert to iPod video with 3GP Converter.

Actually, the results I have received from these freeware programs is better than any freeware and most trialware programs I have tried.

Don't know nothing of iPod, but for my cell phone, Super has turned out to be the perfect tool. Full movies around 170 MB in 3gp format. Not that it's any fun to watch a movie as big as a stamp, but somehow cool nevertheless.

Try videora ipod converter, free works good. Of course the free stuff won't give you the optimum video quality needed to show the video on tv, but it looks great on the pod.

    best/fastest/easiest/free
Unfortunately the first word in the word group above doesn't go with the rest!!!

Doing anything right is never easy, Portable video is a great example of this, Although the best way is a matter of opinion, I will guarantee that by doing the videos the easiest, fastest free-est way you'll end up with a bunch of movies that you will think look like s##t in 6 months. There are many guides on this site that can show you how to use several freeware or very cheap tools to make iPod videos that look good even on HDTV, I would suggest the x264 Codec and MeGUI, or SUPER like Mats said. If you take a little extra time to learn you won't be disappointed. iPods now will accept higher resolutions that allow for exceptional quality, The Windows softwares are not quite there yet but will be very soon, Don't rush, try some different progs and see what YOU(or your friend) think!!

Changed MP4 and GP3 encoding from ffmpeg to mencoder.
mencoder is GPL, so if the app won't run without it, it to would have to be released as GPL and therefor the source must be made available which would essentially make it free. Had a look and couldn't see any links to source though.

As for free not fitting in. Are their any iPod converters other than Nero and QuickTime that aren't using x264, libavcodec or XviD? Because x264, libavcodec and XviD are all free.

"Free" isn't the word that didn't fit in, it was "Best" going with "easiest and fastest", In fact celtic_druid I have you to blame for getting me addicted to x264!!!

I think the newest version of Fairuse Wizard has an Ipod setting. I don't know how good the results are though. I think Celtic_Druid has a link to the build here. I think it may be down a few posts. However FU only loads ISO images or the DVD (with DVD43 or AnyDVD running in the background).

FairUse does SP MPEG-4 only. My build at least uses Nero's encoder for audio. I suppose I could have added AVC profiles. The app is VfW based though so that means DVD-->avi-->raw-->mp4. Still at least with the iPod not supporting bframes, you don't have to deal with that. Still if I were going to add AVC iPod profiles, I think I would modify the app to use the cli encoder first. Could possibly also modify it to load a set of DVD files.
