I'm new to ripping so bear with me. I started smartripper and was getting rip speeds around 2x with a 16x dvd drive. I know the read and rip speeds aren't likely to be identical (I wasn't expecting 16x rip speeds) but this is ridiculous. So I got the Nero dvd-drive speed prog and here are my results:

And to answer some potential questions: I don't see any option to enable DMA on this, but it is enabled on all my other drives. It's set as the Secondary master. I'm running Win98 with the latest ASPI layer. Specs: 1.5GHZ P4, 512MB RDRAM, 60GB HDD (primary master), Liteon LTD-163 dvd-rom drive (Secondary master), Liteon LTR-24102b CD-RW (primary slave), Abit TH72 Mobo, GF3 Ti500.
So can anyone explain why my ripping speeds are so slow for me on this drive?

not sure but I have the same Liteon -163 and I average around 6,000KB/sec. Sometimes I get close to 10,000. My DMA is enabled. But I'm using WinXP. Possible you need a firmware update...just a guess.
