  1. Hi All,
I capture tv show and save using DV format, 1 1/2hr resulted in 20gb file, which is correct size for DV with that time of recording.

Then I split the whole video to smaller video cutting the ads away (I just found out about selecting the commercial and using "->Edit -> Cut" menu instead just now) and save it to 10 segments of AVI file.
Then I join them using Append menu in Vdub, but the joined files size now is 70Gig !
How come the size grew that big ? I have selected direct stream copy in both audio and video.

Then I encode it with deinterlacing filter and Xvid and in the status windows it has about 500000 frames while it should only have about 135000 frames for 90 minutes Pal video.
Then in the frame rates / second it shows about 8-10 frames per second, while I noticed the frames number processed only 3-4 frames/sec/

Has any body ever experienced this ?

Did it show the proper running time after appending? (Minus the commercials) If it had re-encoded, it would have taken a obviously longer time than a simple join.

I'd check the framerate and the other file info also. Something had to change for it to get that much bigger. Maybe it appended the files more than once each? But then your running time should have increased.

  3. Well, I have to check on the running time on hte AVI, it should triple too I guess.
But one thing for sure is the encoded file (xVid) runs perfectly and run for the tru length of the captured movie minus the commercial.
Another thing is the encoding time is 3 times longer I guess because it has to process three times as much frame which I don't know where they came from and where go to after encoding.

VDub will append all the files in 1 shot when you first append. So on the first try you may have appended all the files when you thought it was only 1 and 2 that were joined. You then tried to append #3 and 3 to 10 were appended again. If you did this each time you will have some of the segments many times.

Just load part 1 and then append part2. Everything should now be there (1to10). Should be easy to check the file at this point.

Just remember to save in direct stream mode

    Just another thought:

You shouldn't have to cut and save your video in 10 parts as you have done. I don't know if I'm wrong but I get the impression that you highlighted the portions you wanted to keep and saved those individually and then tried to recombine them after.

When you edit in vdub you should markin and markout the portion you want to cut and then cut the highlighted portion between the marks. Then move to the next portion to cut and then do a markin and markout and then cut that and so on. What you will be left with is one complete video with all the parts removed which you may then save using directstream copy or if you wish to apply filters and/or compress to another codec etc... then use full processing mode.

This shouldn't be a problem with dv but with other codecs you need to use the key frame advance before cutting to make sure you cut only on key frames or you will lose audio synch.
