After reading through the fourm I discovered that some people have complained over time of their BVP-4 Plus causing a kind of smearing effect on text. I just got a used one on eBay and I think my BVP-4 may have this particular issue -- does EliteVideo still service these machines or is there any chance I could figure out how to do it myself? Below is a screenshot showing an example of what it looks like -- notice how it affects the text and the far left side of the image. The settings on the BVP don't impact the smearing (it's there regardless of adjustments to color level, flesh tone or color adjustments, luminance adjustments, or black restore on or off, the noise filter switch in the on or off position). I of course tested it using different cables, running it through the composite connection, etc and got no change. Turning up the resolution boost DOES seem to decrease the amount of smearing slightly, but this may just be a visual "trick" I imagine because of the added noise. I turned the resolution boost all the way down for the test images.
Can this be fixed?

I don't see any smearing. It might just be your tv or computer monitor.

Maybe smearing isn't the right word. The problem is visible to me on both my preview CRT monitor and my LCD computer monitor, here let me provide a blown up version -- the image on the right (two circles) shows how the text seems to have a dark shadow trailing off to the right of the image. Also in the right image, the left side of the frame appears to be lighter then the left side of the first image.

I see what you are talking about but as I understand the left side image shows pre-enhancement and the right-side image shows post-enhancement.
Apparently you "mucked" about too much and increased the brightness/contrast much more than you should have.
Or are you trying to say that the right-hand image is with all adjustments at their normal setting (i.e., no adjustment)?

Yes -- if you are familiar with the BVP-4, it has a split screen function, a knob you can adjust to show the "unprocessed" (the passthrough) image (the left image) and the enhanced image (the right image) -- but I put all the settings at their minimal or off position for the right image -- it is no matter though, adjustments made to the IRE and PTP luminance, as well as the color level don't affect the shadow effect at all, it's there no matter what. This particular BVP-4 certainly does slightly alter the image even with all the controls set to zero, but I don't think the shadow effect should be there regardless?

I don't have the unit although I know of it but LordSmurf actually owns one.
