  1. hi, this will be my first lcd tv, and just wondering if a westinghouse is a good lcd tv, i've gone over avs forum, over 28pages!!! in one thread, doesn't really norrow anything down,

but will be used for just normal cable tv not HD, and dvd's, how would the quality on it be if over component or s-video? and even just for normal tv, wont be using HD inputs so not sure how that will look?

    thanks

  2. regular cable tv looks pretty much like crap on LCDs, this is because it has to convert it to digital with a pull down filter. You should look at it in the store first.

Isn't there more than one model 32" westinghouse?

  3. Well I use one of the 32" LCDs from that thread.
I don't have the model number here at work.
Edit: I just checked and it is the LTV-32W6

The one I have has a built-in Tuner, Maybe you could get OTA HD?
BTW I did a scan of my basic cable feed and found HD channels in the clear.

OK I use it for a Computer Monitor via the VGA connection. I use it with a DVD player & a DVD recorder via Component connections. Could be nice with a upscaling DVD player.

I use it for HD from a Dishnetwork HD DVR via HDMI.

I use it via S-Video that goes through a 7.1 Receiver that does video switching for a Tivo, and a SD Dish DVR.

The Picture is Ok to me via S-Video and very nice with the rest.

DVDs look much better on the Westinghouse than on my old standard Def TV. The SD channels are OK, But after watching HD and DVDs, it takes me a little while to be happy with their picture.

I've been watching mostly HD, Networks, Monster HD, Rave, Universal HD, HDNet HDNet Movies, and DVDs on it. I use it with a wireless keyboard and mouse and just switch back and forth between computer and TV. I can do that because of the DVRs, I just pause what I'm watching when I go to the computer screen.

I think I paid $750 or so + tax on sale.

I've been happy. A nice feature is the ability to adjust brightness and sharpness and saturation and tint for each input indepent of the others.VGA is up to 1366 by 768 resolution as I remember it.

To sum up as I recall it the different inputs, HDMI, 2 component, Composite Video, S-Video, Tuner, VGA make it flexible enough for me.

    Hope this helps.

  4. cool that does help thx
hopefully they have some left, one BB was sold out

yeah the sales person switched from normal coax to HD input and there is a big diff, but it kinda looks like CTR tv, as long as i can get better quality out of a dvd player, over the py inputs, i'll be happy,

now i ned a 20ft VGA cable too, lol, so i can use it as a monitor

Some of those Westinghouse 32" LCDs came with the Faroudja DCDi deinterlacer*. That is what you want for watching 480i cable. There are alot of user reviews in Epinions.com. If I recall, they praised the parts and the picture but thought the case quality was cheap. All that varies by specific model number. Make an effort to get the one with DCDi.

    http://www.av-outlet.com/en-us/dept_335.html

DCDi will perform the conversion of 480i to progressive and manage the upscale to the LCD native 1366x768p resolution.

  6. cool, i just checked the specs on their website, and yes it has DCDi
    here are the specs http://www.westinghousedigital.com/pc-15-2-32-lcd-tv.aspx

its not the best LCD tv, but for $799cdn thats almost 1/2 price of the name brand ones,

i went to buy it, but BB was sold out all over canada, i have to get a lay away thing, didn't know BB does that, so its already paid for, just have to wait till it comes in and then i just go and pick it up they have 300 on order

  7. LTV-32w1 is a different model than I have and it may be a better match if you plan to watch SDTV. From what I see on their website it has a different set of inputs....

2 Composite In, S-Video In, 2 YPbPr, RGB/VGA/PC Video In, DVI-HDCP, Audio out (dual RCA), 5 Audio in (dual RCA), Antenna-in, Power-in

    IOWs DVI instead of HDMI
    2 composite in vs 1
Cable ready TV but most likely not HD ready

However with it having DCDi and Knowing the edDV knows his stuff I think it is a better match for your needs.

    Enjoy

In the USA, all TV sets over 25" manufactured after July 2006 are supposed to include an ATSC tuner, so these tunerless Westinghouse sets are inventory only.

There are great deals out there now for tunerless inventory. If you plan to use cable or DBS tuners, these are a great deal.

  15. OTOH the OP has said the one he looked at is $799 canadian whuch nakes it really low priced in USA dollars.

If no tuner is needed it sounds like a nice deal especially with the Faroudja DCDi deinterlacer.

    Cheers

  16. US law specifies that hdtv tuners must be put in new sets. They define a time line based on size of set. 37" have to have them by this year for example.

  17. crap, i didn't realize that is wasn't HDMI!!!!!!
is it a big diff between HDMI> YPbPr?

this has DVI-HDCP instead of HDMI i guess,

is DVI just for monitors use? or are there dvd players or digitial receivers with DVI? as far as i know those come with HDMI not DVI, if anything i think they sell DVI>HDMI cables

also, i will be using this as a monitor as well, im guessing get a DVI cable instead of VGA output? the only problem is cable lenth for DVI, i read it shouldn't be longer then 5m or you lose quality hmmm, possble theatre computer maybe

oh and what is HDCP? HIGH-BANDWIDTH DIGITAL CONTENT PROTECTION?
does this not allow you to play burned movies through the DVI port or something?

I'd stay away from the Olevia. Unless they've changed them in the last year, they have no zoom function that will allow 4:3 letterboxed video to be viewed full screen so you get black bars on all 4 sides. I have the Westinghouse LTV-32w1 and I thought the picture looked as good as any of the other LCDs I looked at and it has a decent selection of inputs.
