Sony definitly fucked over its gaming audiance by forcing blu-ray down gamers throats, and turning ps3 into a pawn in its petty media war.

Thus Ps3 costs $600, and not $300-$400. Even at $600 sony is still LOSEING money on its set price for ps3. Pathetic.

If Blu-Ray fails the media format war, and Playstation loses it spot in the market due PS3 being so damn expensive. Then sony has pretty much shot itself in the foot in both areas.

I hate the fact that its now become VIDEO GAME systems that are going to determine the home HD video format. PS3 is WAY too expensive for a video game system (no matter what you say, it is a video game system) and I see it failing.

Playstation was on the market for 4 years before they got to the point where they were just breaking even on each unit sold.
Almost 5 years for the PS2.
Every XBOX-360 that is sold, is sold at a loss too. Microsoft is losing money on every unit they sell.
Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft don't make their gaming revenue from selling hardware. They make the $$$ from licensing deals with the software companies that want to make games for their machines.

When the PS2 launched, DVD and DVD player sales were stagnating and market anaylysts were getting ready to write the format off. PS2 cost considerably less than most good stand-alone DVD players that were available at the time (sound familiar?).
Within a year of the PS2 launch, DVD sales more than doubled (the same could not be said for DVD players at that time though).
And who was it that developed (or at least had helped) the DVD format? Sony & Phillips abandoned their MMCD format to join Toshiba & Matsushita (who abandoned their Super Density disc format) to jointly develop the DVD format (which borrowed from both MMCD & SD discs).
Again, sound familiar?

Here we are in 2006, and Sony is trying to do the exact same thing they did with the PS2 & DVD, but instead with PS3 & BD.
What's the difference?
This time there is viable competition in the HD-DVD.
This time, they haven't let BD stay on the market long enough to establish itself.
This time they're asking for WAY too much money [yes, I realize that $600 for a PS3 that plays BD AND has more computing power than any other console (most PC's), has web browser, and plays PS1 & PS2 games is a much better deal than $1000 for a stand-alone BD player].
They're trying to acheive the same thing they did before, but unfortunatey, they're not doing it the same way -- they aren't being smart about it.
Alienating your core consumer (people who are willing to save up for a month or 2 to get the $300 for a new console) is not going to sell your new product to said core consumer....

I doubt Sony saw the PS2 as a way to advance the DVD format. Not so with the PS3. It is being marketed as a cheap BLU-Ray player that can also play video games.

The PS2 was a video game system. But it could also play DVDs. Same with the XBOX 360. It is a video game system. But if you want to watch HD-DVDs there will be an add on you can buy. The movie playing is a bonus, not the main purpose of the machine.
