Ok here's what I have in mind:

I recently bought the "new" Star Wars dvd set with the "original" release on it. (I only had the full screen vhs original tapes so I needed these widescreen sets to complete my collection ).

What I want to do is to put both the SE Star Wars and the Original Star Wars on the same Dual Layer disc. My wrinkle is I'd love to be able to crosslink chapters between the two movies.

Essentially I want to hot swap from say the hoth battle in Empire Strikes Back on the Original version and instantly switch to the Special Edition version and back and forth. Since I can now do dual layer burning with my pioneer 111 I'd love to be able to put both versions of the movie on one disc and flip back and forth.

I have Tmpgenc Dvd Author 2.0 and Ulead Dvd Movie Factory SE for dvd authoring. Any suggestions for this approach???

    -----------------

Could I do something like the ANGLE feature to accomplish this?? I've never done that on a home made disc. Could I go from angle 1 being the ORIGINAL feature and go to angle 2 for the SPECIAL EDITION version??? What software can do that? Also can it be freeware if TDA 2.0 can't do homemade angles???

    Suggestions are welcome.....

EDIT --- I'm downloading the trial of dvd lab to see if this might do the trick.....

DLP can do multi-angle and branching. The issue with what you want to do is the different running times of the two version, with bits trimmed here and extended there, it is difficult, if not impossible to get the angles in sync. You should also read the restriction on multi-angle videos regarding bitrates (not too high) and GOPs (closed, same structure). These won't be too much on an issue if you are re-encoding the videos to fit on one disc.

A branching version might by simpler, but then I'd have to ask - what's the point. If you have both, why would you want to swicth backwards and forwards. There will also be a definate and noticable quality difference between the versions, give the utter distain Lucas had for the original versions.

    Thanks guns1inger.

I downloaded dvd lab last night. I tried a basic attempt with two ds9 episodes of the same length. I set chapter marks at equal 5 minute lenghts. WHat I want to do is to be able to swap back and forth between them.

I couldn't find any language about angles or branching or anything like that.

Do I have to download the full dvd lab pro trial to get those features enabled?

Also - branching is just jumping from the main movie to several short segments right? I think my XMEN 1 dvd does that. You can watch the main movie but have it hop to cut scenes automatically.

That branching might be more worth it to me for this project. I might not even have to do dual layer if I shrink the main movie enough.

I could rip and shrink the original widescreen disc and then cut the changed segments from the SE version. Then I could insert jump points to go from the ORIGINAL to the SE seemlessly. Now with branching can you have the option to watch the unaltered movie all the way through or do you have to do the hopping?

Only the pro version supports branching and and angles. With multi-angles you can have it so that you use the remote, or you can set up commands at chapter points to automatically switch angles, and even change audio. This way you could have the angle switch to a behind the scenes view with commentary, then back again. This is different to using BOV, because BOV always returns to the beginning of the cell from which it was launched.
