hello i am trying to combine three fight dvd's i have from a fight in New York City. the dvd's each have five separate VOB's on them when i use mpeg streamclip to convert the vob's into DV format it will not convert the first vob but it will successfully on the 4 others. on the first one it says unsupported file format. the first is a vob and i do not know why it will not convert it to a DV for me? i have tried using ffmpegx as well to convert it and it tells me the same thing.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

    thx

The first VOB with video is VTS_01_1.VOB. The one named VTS_01_0.VOB is a menu.

I posted something similar in another thread a few weeks back and a good tip that came from another member of the forum (Case, I'm guessing) was to use Mac the Ripper's title extraction feature. I can't remember the title of my thread but you can check out Serbian's discussion of MTR in this thread:

If your VOBs are small enough, you can just drag all three of them into Toast and burn. Take care.

Sorry I didn't understand what you meant by the first VOB. It was logical to assume you meant the very first one because I've never had Streamclip refuse to read any VOB that had video. I also have never seen VOBs that are 833 mb each. The ones I've seen are 1 GB each except for the last one in a title set. If Streamclip and ffmpegx can't read one of those VOBs my assumption is something is damaged or in error in that file.

If the DVD plays okay from the start, you could use the analog-to-digital passthrough on a DV camcorder or DV capture device to import the video to your Mac while it is playing on the DVD player.

more than likely you need to open the
    the VTS_01.1.VOB, select the selection
"Open all VOBs" or somesouch, and
    then Fix Time Code Breaks.
Then Save the Fixed TCB VOB to DV Stream.

My Sony DVDirect recorder makes smaller-than-normal vob's in a title set. I found it odd, but it was ok.

As for MPEGStreamclip not opening that first file, it is likely damaged. This has happened to me before when I would try to open a dirty disc directly in MPEGStreamclip. Re-ripping, even if the disc isnt copy-protected, with Mac the Ripper always solved the problem. Oh, and cleaning the disc, too.
