Hello everybody:
I installed a free version of Avast! antivirus and I am thinking about taking it out. The problem is that it tries to update AV database without permission and it is getting on my nerve.
When I had Norton, I was setting updates to the manual mode and was only getting reminders, which I think that's how it should be.
In the area where I live it is very difficult to get on a net on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, no matter if you have cable, DSL or dial-up. Sometimes it is plain impossible!
I often need to send just a couple emails, which takes about a minute, and I do not wish to be slowed down with software, which hijacks my Internet acces.
I had Agnitum outpost firewall, very good firewall, but it is designed to go to the net automatically, which annoys me a great deal. And so I removed it.
Does anybody know if AVG or any other AV (except Norton and McAffee) have a manual update mode? I wanted to ask tech support, but it is limited to customers only.
Thx: walter (thanks in advance for all replies, I will only be able to see them 24 hrs from now)
P.S. Many thanks to the folks who gave me an excellent description regarding reg cleaner soft. I got "ccleaner" and I am extremely happy.

I guess you could not tell it your type of internet connection so that it ask each time it tries to auto update.
Honestly though autoupdate is a good thing. -
you can uncheck that option even in the free version and just update it when you want. I dont do that though, I let it update automatically.
If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0 -
Check the Scheduled Tasks in the Test center. Double click on the Update Plan and adjust as desired, (although the options are limited).

If you run Home Edition...
Right click Avast icon in task bar / click "Program Settings" / select "Update(Basic)" / set both to manual.
That's all there is to it. It will never bother you again.

Anti-virus should be updated whether auto or manual. I switched from AVG to Avast when I discovered Avast detected 3 or 4 malwares that both AVG and Panda Software Active Scan missed. As Faustus stated auto update is a good thing.

Many thanks, guys! Setting through the Windows worked, as suggested by NiteLite.
Auto update is good if you have a fast connection. I have a dial up, for what I do, it is perfectly adequate, I rarely log more than 10 hrs a month.
I did try DSL, directly from a phone company, but on weekends it really does not matter, very difficult to get through., because of that, their price of $40/month is a bit too much. Their light version is only marginally faster than dial-up.
Plus you have to install their software in order to have that DSL. That software is designed for marginally computer illiterates, it takes over your computer and then you get one msg after another - this is wrong, that needs to be changed, etc. There is no option of disconnecting it. Makes you wonder who was in charge of that project.
As for cable, one acquaintance had to cancel his cable Internet, he just cannot get connected. Another acquaintance has cable and very happy with it. I guess it depends where you live.
Thx: walter -
Glad you got it walter4h.
By my post I didn't mean it "shouldn't" be regularly updated just that I also prefer to do a manual check at startup and/or shutdown.

AVG has a little taskbar alert that tells me a new version is available. I have to open it and click the update button if I want to update it. You can also change it to silently update without telling you.
