I've noticed this here and elsewhere also on the front page of some sites.

The front page does not have a clear direct option to either register, login or logout.
One site I haven't visited in a while even said I was visiting again when I went from their front page back to their forum page. At least it remembered I was still logged in but I found it funny that it thought I was coming back when all I did is go to their front page

I know that login/out is usually attached to the forums but it would seem more inviting if there was at least a clear descriptive link on the front page or some clear text inviting people to register by clicking on a link.

Any technical reasons or is it just a design decision?

    Thanks

Just my opinion since I don't represent Baldrick in this: The majority of our site is listed on the front page. The forum, even though we think it is this site, is secondary to most visitors. It may be a design decision to have the forum as a separate part of the site and not directly linked to the front page.

Since I generally only frequent the forum, I rarely even look at the front page.

But, it's a good point. It will be interesting to see what others say.

And if I do occasionally visit the front page here, I also get all the 'new' features and programs that I am already familiar with.

Yep, most people I know offline, when VH is mentioned, they are not even aware of a forum. To them it's all guides and lists.

That's funny, (but believable), considering that nearly half the front page is forum links.

Nah, it's more along the lines of 25% of the content space. But still, it's hard to miss a quarter of the page.

OK, I'll grant you that. I'm used to positioning the page so the top of the "latest forum posts" section is at the top of the screen, and in that view the impression is that it's nearly half the page, (although it's technically closer to a third), but it's still the largest single section and difficult to miss.

  7. It never bothered me that the login was on the forum page,
but it always did seem like "something" was missing on the front page!

Not a big deal for me because I don't have a reason to login
unless I'm in the off topic forum!

That's also how I started here.

I would read the list of latest news and then go to the guides.

When I found the forums I was mostly interested in the "teaching"
forums, but later went to the off topic forum.

  8. It might be good idea to add a simple login near the "Search our entire site" and "Visit our sponsors" position.

However the page is fairly busy as is, and Balrick might not want to add to the "confusion". I think most new visitors come via google directly to the forum or lists anyway.
