I download avi videos that have been processed with divx....I installed the free divx so I could view the avi files in windows media player....without it, I get only sound - no video. These downloaded avi files are very small....the quality is excellent.

I captured video as a huge avi file and thought I could use divx to compress it to a smaller avi file. I used the free trial divx and converted it and to my surprise, I got a divx file instead of avi. I don't understand. I'm pretty confused. Can someone explain it to me?

According to Divx, they added that extension for the benefit of Divx compatible standalone players so they would recognize it as a compatible Divx file. But you can just change the extension to .avi and everything will be fine.

Gee, thanks for the response. I used winavi to convert and it accepted the divx extension.
    Thanks again
