Not exactly cheap at $0.82/ea (at the time of this post) but this is the only supplier that I have found for the waterproof prinable Taiyo Yuden media.

Has anyone ever purchased from them? Anyone want to give it a shot? (I don't have a need, as I don't have a printer capable of printing to discs yet).

    /-slight rant-/
When these become more available, I may actually get an inkjet for disc printing. Don't underesitmate the need for waterproof discs in a non-tech friendly/family enviroment. Last thing I want is ink getting spun off into the internals of a drive or player, ink on hands/fingers -> clothes/furnature/carpet. Remember, with kids, especially young ones, nothing is impossible.
    /-end rant-/

Why buy waterproof discs? Being a good parent is a lot cheaper.

I guess if you want kids beat these days, you have to beat them yourself.

The most ignorant reply I've read lately. Congrats, lumis. Now you can go back to beating yourself. Hope your hacking gear is waterproof.

  10. I have used the white, hub-printable Taiyo Yuden Ultra Hydroshield CDROMs from DiskMakers.com.

They have several advantages that help to meet my needs. They are glossy, rather than flat finish. They also dry instantly when printed so there is no need to wait. They are expensive but I've been very impressed with the appearance of the finished disks. I have no coasters. They look almost as good as commercial products. I understand the DVD version will become avaialble very soon.

The paucity of the vocabulary of some posters in this forum is regrettable.

  13. If a disc is waterproof, won't the ink from a printer just make a slimy mess on the surface ? Secondly, why is everyone so keen on waterproof discs ? Or has someone made an underwater DVD player I don't know about ?

All joking aside, I've just been reading this: http://www.emedialive.com/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=11716 and although I'm no physicist I can't see how this discs are going to be truly water resistant insofar as the print surface is concerned - there are too many variables in ink manufacture for starters. Personally I've never had a disc smear in normal use and I think these discs have got to be one of the most overrated solutions to a non-existant "problem" I've ever come across. Now if waterproof maps, parking tickets and other such items that get exposed to rain were of more concern I could understand it, but who sticks their discs in the dishwasher ?

Before anyone says anything I have been known to use an ultrasonic bath to clean discs before now, but only the filthy ones in which case education and dinner plates are more important than whether or not you can get a printable surface wet. I certainly wouldn't pay extra for this "innovation".

  14. They work look at the link i posted the ink isnt coming off the disk i have in water. Now nowone is going to watch a dvd in aquamans home but the reason i buy them is becasue i dont like my dvds that i lend out smudged from people drink beverages then putting their wet finger tip on the disk of someone acidentally spills water on them with the matte disk if i wet my finger tip i can feel the disk take the moisture of my finger

  15. As I said, education might be easier - I'd throw a nut if anyone mistreated my property. What happened to people only handling discs by the edges ?

Why would you need waterproof discs? Do you have plans to swim with them or something?

    Waterproof = Durability.

One example I can think of (although this would apply to the waterproof CDs) is when I was in highschool, I took some B&W photography classes. People brought CDs into the darkroom to play, where wet fingers were quite common.

Think of someone handling a disc after holding a cold drink or bottle. Some people take discs in the car with them, I know many people who have left discs sitting on the seat of their car, or in open wallets. How hard would it be to spill a drink? That could apply to DVDs as well, as many parents have dvd players in their minivans to entertain the kids.

Fact is you can't predict people, because people are stupid. I don't mean that as an attack on anyone. It is just that... um... people can be very... how shall we say... creative when it comes to doing things wrong.
