I'd like to remove a 5 minute or so segment from a DVD that is encrypted. I understand that there may be some software that does this. Where can I find it?

DVD Shrink (might need AnyDVD) in re-author mode can do this.

Do you want to keep the menus etc intact, or just have an edited version of th emovie at the end ?
There are much better options for editing DVDs than Vegas. While it can load VOBs, this feature is designed for VOBs coming from DVD cameras, not commercially pressed discs.
If you don't need the menus, rip with DVD Decrypter in IFO mode, demuxing the audio and video streams as you go. Use an mpeg editor such as Womble or VideoRedo to edit the footage, then re-author.
If you want to keep the menus, rip with DVD Decrypter in file mode, and use PGCEdit or titlesetblanker or similar to blank the section you don't want.
If DVD Decrypter chokes because of ArCoSS protection, use Ripit4me to create the the PSL file that decrypter needs in these circumstances.Read my blog here.

I only need to take a few minutes out of the DVD that is part of a movie. I just want to bring it into a video I'm creating. Menus, and the like are of no interest. I think the decrypt link is what I'm looking for. Thanks.

I downloaded DVDFab and DVDAny in their trial form, but they seem limited for my use. It looks like I'd have to decrypt an entire 2 hour movie to get the short segment I need, which is fairly close to the start. I'm not even sure how DVDAny operates. What starts it into operation?
In any case, maybe cinematize is the answer for me. I heard about it today. -
If you just want a 5 minute segment, DVD Shrink is possibly the quickest. I read your post as wanting to edit 5 minutes out of a DVD, and keep the rest.
Rip the DVD to your HDD or open it in Shrink. Click Re-author. Drag the main movie from the right to left hand pane. Right-click on it and select Chose Start and End Times, then isolate the part you want. Click OK, then backup, and save to a HDD folder. You will get a small DVD structure with just you 5 minutes in it. From there you can do what you need to with the VOB created by Shrink.Read my blog here.

rip to hdd> open in TMPGenc xpress 3.0 or better> cut unwanted video from before and after the part you want> output to AVI> import into vegas....
-
I must admit I never thought of "out" that way, but I can see where it could be. I just want to keep 5 minutes, or less.
I'm somewhat familiar with rip, but what can I use to rip the DVD? I have Nero 6. Won't that (rip) take two hours? -
Ripping the DVD should take somewhere between 5 and 25 minutes. Make sure you use DVDFab Decrypter, and not just DVDFab (they are different).
If in doubt, Google it. -
Have a look at this guide http://www.dvdshrink.info/re-author-advanced.php

I applied DVDFab Decrypt and it took 14 minutes. I got quite a few files, but I think the VOB files are the most important for my purpose. I have no idea how they are oganized. When I opened them with the default program, Nero Showtime 2.0, I got a playable section of the DVD. I could use the slider pretty well to position myself with VTS_01_01.VOB, but on VTS_01_02,VOB the slider wouldn't slide. Both files are identical in size, slightly more than 1G. I brought the second one into Vegas and it looked good.
I guess these a parceled out into 30 min segments. These files don't have IFO files, but other higher numbered ones do. No idea what IFOs are.
The last VTS file is VTS_06_1.VOB. -
I don't mean to be rude but have you actually tried DVD Shrink? It's exactly what you need.

Shrink seems like a minimalist program on operation matters. I looked at the Doom doc, and figured re-authoring might be what's in order. I selected re-author, and manipulated the right-side of the screen through what I had produced with DVD Decrypt. I never got a chance to descend to the VIDEO_TS folder. As I descended, it suddenly displayed Menus, Main Movie and Extras. I see no button to push to yield anything from this, nor do I have a clue if I should select a file from that display.
-
I puttered around with Shrink and got something going using Re-author. I selected the single Title file and then let Shrink crank through it. The first time, it tried to write it back onto the DVD in the drive, which is ROM. I looked at some of the results in the temp folder, but they really looked like copies of what Decrypt had produced. I then found I could direct the output of re-author to my HD, so I did. The result was a mixture of VOB, IFO, and BUP files. They all looked like copies of the Decrypt. I ran one VOB into Vegas. It performed the way it did hours ago with Vegas. No sound track, and kind of slow and inconsistent.
Looks like I need to know more about this program to get it to produce a file I can use with Vegas. Maybe Options is the key. -
Back again. I see there's a way to slice out a section of the DVD. Those little arrows on the icon. Good. However, I still get several VOB files, and no sound in Vegas. Maybe I missed a decrypt option. There's nothing in the decrypt Audio_TS folder.
Well, off to bed. -
The issue is more that you are trying to open VOBs in Vegas. While it can do this, as I pointed out earlier it is designed to open VOBs created by DVD cameras, not from commercial DVDs. VOBs can contain video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles and other subpics and navigation markers. Most cameras do not have many of these features, so the actual VOB structure is a lot less complex.
Your best bet at this stage - open the VOB created by Shrink in virtualdubmod, and output as lagarith or huffyuv video with PCM audio. Load this into Vegas for editing.Read my blog here.
-
lagarith appears to be another program. Are you saying use virtualdubmod to just output the file, and then run lagarith to create a file that Vegas can read? I guess to output, one uses the 9 arrow at the bottom--third from left?
Well, I pushed ahead in dub by selecting the specific section I want to finally use, and pressing the third button. When I play the resulting avi file in winamp, the sound is there but it seems disconnected with the image. When it's played in Vegas, then only a video track is seen. -
lagarith is a codec for losslessly encoding video. If you extract the file you will probably find a .inf file. Right-click and select Install. lagarith should now be available as a codec for compressing video in virtualdub.
Read my blog here.
-
OK, I opened it and it perfomed some operation. I presume then I need to do something to virtualdub after I've selected the file I want to transform. codec? Do I set or select something? Presumably I then press the '9' button and it will produce the desired Vegas avi file that swallows up the VOB parameters properly.
-
I've done this many times and often use one of the two selected methods below
1. Open decrypted .VOB file on harddrive with MPEG2VCR an australian program that cost about $50. This program will set an in and an out point and SAVE a new file (NO RENDER JUST COPIES)
however, If you have .AC-3 audio in the original VOB, it keeps that, and VEGAS chokes.
The option to RENDER the audio only across to MPG layer 2 Audio should be used (sounds like your problem).
2. Open the decrypted .VOB with VOB to MPG --a freeware utility that makes a new file with out re rendering with an acceptable-to-Vegas .mpg extension--.. However, if the audio is AC-3, the file will be MOS (mit out sound) in VEGAS

I'll see if I can polish this off with the lagarith/virtualdub approach--if someone will tell me how to apply the codec in virtualdub as indicated above. I'd like to get it done this way before changing horses.
Here's another thought. A friend told me 6.0 has a 6c and maybe a 6d update. They have something like a DVD import capability that might square the problem I'm having. -
You should be running 6d, but even then, it is not designed for importing commercial discs. It maight work better, but it might not.
As to virtualdub, assuming you have installed lagarith, goto File->Save As. Set the mode to Full Proccessing (in virtualdubmod you can do this from the Save As dialogue. If you can't in vdub, try the Video menu item). When you set the compression, you should now get lagarith as an option.Read my blog here.
-
I tried it with full processing, and Vegas could not see an audio track. I then set the compression to lagarith, and got the same result. In both cases, while in vdub, it produced a set of messages that said, "anchronistic or discontinuous time stamp in audio stream". During the save_as, the status dialog showed it was producing an audio stream.
-
Well if'n you don't want to change horses, try installing this codec so VIRTUALDUB can see your ac-3 audio

Ah, ha, success. Thanks to you and others. BTW, if I want to get rid of the install of the codecx material via the inf open, how do I do that?
I would like to think that I can now use the technique developed here to extract some more short segments from other DVDs. Anyway, I'll give it a try.
It would be good to get all of this into one package. Maybe cinematize, but at least two other prospects were mentioned above. The one by you, and an earlier one. In the latter case, I dismissed it, since when I went to the download site, it showed a 5M file*. That's out of my modem's range for an easy download. I can drag down larger files by going to the local internet cafe. Although, 5M isn't too bad. It'd take about 40 minutes. Well, this is all something to consider. I really only have about 4 such clips to collect.
* I looked throught the msgs, but couldn't find it. Gunslinger might have mentioned it. -
Hmmm. don't see a 6d on the sony site. I guess 6c is the latest, and my friend was mistaken.
