what damage is done? does it not burn?
how do u know which format your computer is? does it say on the drive?

You would have to check your DVD writer to see which one it uses. Many newer ones can use both types. If you get the wrong one, your burning program will probably tell you and it will just spit it out of the drive. No damage done, just won't burn. In the off chance it did burn, you probably will create a coaster, but no damage.
I don't know what software and hardware you have, but many burner programs like Nero will tell you the name of your burner if you don't know it. XP will, also if you go to the Device Manager. Then you should be able to look it up to the left in DVD Writers and see what format it uses and what other media types and brands other members have used. <<<<<<<< -
Most drives nowadays are dual format. They wont care which format you burn. If you have a drive that is only -R or only +R it will simple refuse to recognise the other format. You can't force it to burn, and it won't do any damage. Similarly, if you try to play back a format your play won't recognise, then it will simply refuse to load the disc.
