  1. i transferred some videos to my comp using an adaptec capture card (using sonic mydvd) and trimmed out the scenes i didn't want with tmpgenc (using mpg tools or something).. the mpg file is abt 30+ mins long and abt 1.3gb.. i have several more clips that are relatively the same length.. i was wondering how i can compress them and be able to burn them to one 4.7gb dvd? i know the quality would be poor, but i want to see how poor the quality is. the problem is, what can use to compress them?

also, would i have to convert the mpg into vob files before making it into a dvd?

you can reencode with tmpgenc plus / tmpgenc xpress, use wizard mode to set the desired output size.

    or

you can author, make vob, ifo, bup files from the mpgs with for example tmpgenc dvd author and output the dvd to the hd and then use dvd shrink to shrink so it will fit one dvd.

  3. since im not at my comp, i can't try.. but i will definitely try that.. are all those progs mentioned freeware?

im trying to squeeze in abt 4.5 hours of video (consisiting of many clips) onto 1 dvd.. is that even possible? i can with my standalone dvd recorder, but i don't like it bc it lack options and custom menu.

i have nero.. can i just drop the mpg file in there and create a dvd? and just burn it to my hdd? what other options do i have to shrink a dvd down?

btw, i thought dvd goes by the duration rather than space. however, this didn't seem like the case when i imported the mpg file into nero...

Actually TDA 2.0 now has a built in transcoder. You can shrink the MPG before you burn the dvd. It will fit it to single layer in one step so you can burn after you author instead of shrikning then burning. Great time saver and it doesn't add too much time to normal authoring depending on the amount of compressing you're doing.

    to the original poster:

What you do is author the dvd to the harddrive then burn the vidoe_ts folder that is created. You should be able to author an oversized dvd folder on your harddrive (if nero complains if your set to single layer mode you should be able to ignore it and proceed). Then you use dvd shrink and click open files instead of open disc. You point it to the folder you made and shrink it as normal. Then you can burn the newly shrunk video_ts folder.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

  6. ok, i just dropped the mpg file to nero recode 2, but the "next" button is grayed out.. so i can't get any further. what can i do?

so from what you're saying, i have to have the menu and all layout set before i burn to hdd and shrink with dvd shrink right? normally is it possible to shrink and squeeze abt 4.5 hrs onto 1 dvd?
