  1. when i burn a VCD, most of the time when i watch it on the TV using a DVD player the picture is squished in, because it's not formatted to fit my TV. I get movies that have people with long faces.. it kinda looks stupid. There has to be a way to maintain the widescreen format of most movies using a VCD. If someone can please post a reply telling me how maintain an aspect ratio so that the movie will end up looking like a widescreen so i can eliminate those "long faces". In other words, i just wanna squish the picture..whatever, u get the point.

    jca,

the best thing you can do is
    * Configure/Advanced/ImagePositionMethod
    * and encode small 100 frames (depending on version) of "FitToFrame or FullScreen",
"PreserveAspectRation", etc and play each on on your TV and see which one looks
    right for your viewing pleasure.

    jc,

Sorry, none that I know of. I don't think it's possible though.

The only other alternative is to re-encode it from scratch.
If I understand correctly, DVD2AVI wont do, as it's only for
    MPEG-2 files, not MPEG-1.

Maybe there's an VCD2AVI app flooting around somewhere that you can
get hold of and (or maybe undre another name) and use that to re-encode.

I know, I know, you don't want to do that. Sorry, but AFAIK, there ain't
no other way! ...except what I laid out above. Someone may suggest
    the app I'm talking about.

Assumg that above works, how's the quality of this VCD?
If it's very good and above still holds true, then maybe you have a chance
without loosing too much quality, but it quality of VCD is already in bad
shape (blocks) then you may as well stick to strechies.

  5. thanks vhelp......one last thing, i need to know the configs for TMPGenc for a centered, letterbox/widescreen that just keeps its intended size, that way the image wont be stretched. thanks a lot!

  6. i think if you encode it with tmpgenc with 16:9 aspect ratio, it might solve your problem.

  7. yeah i know that... but ym problem is that i have an avi file that is 576x240 i think... i wanna keep that size on my TV which is just a regular tv..not one of those special 16:9 ones..i wanna find out how to convert the file right so i wont have to waste CDs and use them as coasters.

In Order to make it (S)VCD compliant (if you want to play it on a standalone player), you have to reencode.
Select source aspect ratio 1:1(VGA), full screen[keep aspect ratio].
To see the whole picture on a TV screen you have to add borders to all sides (TV overscan).
In TMPG use video arrange method: center[custom size].
    PAL VCD: 320x146
    NTSC VCD: 320x122
    PAL SVCD: 448x306
    NTSC SVCD: 448x254
These sizes are not 100% accurate, but very close, so you wont see difference between original and target aspect ratio. To get it 100% accurate you have to crop a little off the original. Have a look at the tool section, FitCD is not only a bitrate calculator but helps you to resize correctly.
