    Hi!
I lately wrote to Origing storage. Not a very good beginning, they do not either know theeir drive specifics. They told me it is an oem by teac: dv-w28e-793
Does anybody know teac or this one particularly?
I am not able to understand if it can write double layer and dvd-ram...
I do not know which else slimline external writer to buy, as liteon seems to be no more good lately. A slimline enclosure with a slimline internal writer could be a choice, hoping in noo conflicts...
    Bye!

So, they sent me that link without telling for which one drive it was. And, in that link, I do not understand if it just read or even write double layer. And no mentions to dvd-ram.
In teac.com site there is a similar model, dv-w28ea, which write both DL and dvd-ram, but has got 2 and not 8MB of buffer.
So, it is a bit confusing... I was entusiastic to have found the right drive, but if it is already so difficult to have support for a simple question, it is not a good begining, as I said...

    HUAGHHHHH!!!!!!!!
    Sig, Sob....

Just open DVDInfoPro or NeroDVDspeed. It will list the drive and all of its capabilities.

    mumble mumble...
Well, I would like to be able to discover this BEFORE to uy the drive.
I do not have it yet... I am still in the pre-sale info phase... trying to understand if the drive will write the medias which I need, if it will support ripping, if the place where I buy it can be trusted and can give me support in the future etc...
Talking of ripping, what are the specifics that the drive must have to support ripping? How can I discover if the drive I will buy will allow me to copy dvd or not... (I mean, dvd movie. I never did it, so I am supppsosing, from what I have understood, that ripping is the method needed to decript and then burn a protected movie.)... Mmm, I go to check the forum and if I do not find anything maybe I post a new question about this...
    Bye K.K.!

All you really need is support for -R discs. Although almost all current drives support +/-R, so its no big deal. DL is also surported by most current models, but with the current cost of media, is highly used as of yet. You don't need DVDRAM suport, unless you have some specific need for it. All drives can RIP a disc, all they are doing is reading it.

And sorry, I didn't realize you were doing research for a future purchase.

This is an interesting info, yes, as you say, all drives do both +and- format, but at the moment to buy the right media it is interesting to know this. So, - format is more appropriate for copying dvd movies?

Yes, but I prefer to have this possibility for the future and for those movies too larges for a SL (if the cost will be not so hight, I would prefer to not loose quality by compressing)

Yes, I had o indea, at the beginning, that this format was still at the beginning and few drives do all format including this (and they are possibly more expensive).
I am trying to understand its practie use, but, still now, I only can suppose two things: it can be useful to backup datas if one has got no more space on HD, because it allow drag and drop, while normal dvd not. And it can be useful to read and maybe edit disks used by some digital camara. I do not have one, but I once wanted one...
After that, I have no idea about dvdram utility...

Yes, after writing to you I posted a new thread, discovering this... But, at same time, I see that some drives has got css read speed limits. Unfortunately Lite-on only has got no limit, but I will not buy Lite-on after all what I read of new ones, by users and by reviewers... and by vendors.
Maybe BenQ also does not have such limit. And it seems to be more sure as drive than Lite-On...
And sorry, I didn't realize you were doing research for a future purchase.
You understood I had it already and You took the time to search infos for me, and should be sorry? Never, I am thankful!
    Bye!
I am waiting an aswer from vendor in my city, than will decide if to buy from him or from internet.
May I ask You if You know why one should connect the dvd writer via usb2 and the hard disk via firewire instead of the opposite, or of both on firewire or both on usb? I understood that both connection give enough speed for a dvd drive, while only firewire 2 would really support a 7200rpms hard disk transfert rate, bt there are few of cases with this connection. No one found till now. I understand that many people say that connected at same time hard disk and dvd in usb or firewire and noticed no differences, but someone still say that firewire could be better for less cou usage, and, connecting these two peripherals at same time, it is better a pcmia combo adapter and to connect dvd in usb and HD in firewire. I asked why but he never answered, but it was so precise that I am asking why so and not the reverse etc...

You can get modified firmware for most drives that disable the RIP speed limitation. But it isn't really a big deal. It doesn't really matter to me if I can rip a disc in 12 minutes instead of 15 minutes.

I've only used desktop pc's and I've never had to deal with external devices. I wouldn't expect there to be much difference between firewire and usb, especially if your pc uses usb2.
