Hi... Does anyone know of a way to convert AVI's to .ts files? Tried searching the site/forum/google, etc, but no joy. If it can't be done, fair enough, but most things seem to be 'do-able' these days.

Hi Brainfire, I have heard that VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) can convert mpeg2 to mpeg2 transport stream or (.ts) files. I dont know if it can do it straight from avi files.

Peronally .wmv would be more my choice for a streaming video format, even over a lan and can be done in windows media encoder.
There is a tutorial on how to broadcast files this way here:

Hi - The reason I wanted to know is for a Dbox 2 - mine does direct recording/playback from my PC, but uses the .ts format, which works perfectly well, and no third-party software involved. It can be done using VLC and Dboxwinserver, but there are a few issues with it, e.g. the sound can get out of sync, PC not powerful enough to do the decoding, port issues, etc, so the .ts would be the preferred format for me.

I've got loads of AVI's on the PC, so you can imagine the time it would save having to convert/write them to DVD using DVD2SVCD. If I could find a simple solution to convert them to .ts to play back through the Dbox it would at least save the DVD's, if not the time involved. I might try the VLC/Dboxwinserver again, but it wasn't very successful the first time around.

Mainconcept MPEG Encoder can create a transport stream, but it saves it as ".mpg". I wonder if simply renaming the resulting file to ".ts" would work for you. Another thing you could try is using your favorite encoder to create an mpeg and then open that up with Womble MPEG VCR, which can then save it as ".ts".
