  1. I'm having problems trying to play a movie on my 360.
    File: Crash.MKV
    Video: H264 Codec
    Audio:Mpeg4 ISO Advanced Codec
    Dolby [TM] AC3 (6 channels) 48000hz
    1280x720
    English Subtitles
I've tried streaming the video using Tversity, but the audio is downmixed to stereo on the 360. I don't know if this is a setting with one of the codecs, or something the 360 is doing. (maybe incompatible)

So then I tried converting the file to AVI With Video: Xvid Mpeg4 codec and Audio: AC3 5.1. The problem is that I'm using Tmpgenc express 4.0, and it doesn't have an option in the audio section for AC3 output. Since the file is already in AC3, I figured I would only have to convert the video. My second problem is that I wanted to remove the English subs. Annoying, huh?

So I changed extension to AVI. Then Used AVImux to make a new AVI file with no Subs. Changed back to MKV. Then I used MKVextract to extract the audio. I then converted the source file to AVI using Tmpgenc 4.0 but chose VIDEO ONLY. Now I want to merge the New AVI file (that has no audio) with the AC3 file. I read that I should use MKVmerge, but it's a command line program and I'm not sure how to use it.
The reason I'm going about it this way is because I have 1080P AVI videos (xvid mpeg4 codec) With 6 channel AC3 that play fine on my 360.
Q1: Is there an easy way of combining the AVI file (with no audio) with the AC3 file?
Q2: Am I going about this the right way? will this even work?

You could try mux with virtualdubmod also, open avi, choose video->direct stream copy, under streams add the ac3 audio, save as new avi.

Perhaps you could actually look into PS3 Media Server before scoffing. While it started out primarily supporting the PS3, PS3MS has expanded to service a number of client devices. Well worth looking into

Actually, I abandoned the games needed to play basic video in containers that fit the 360 needs. The WDTV Live was some of the best $100 I spent on electronics.
    Have a good one,
