Last week I recorded over consecutive nights on my HDD a number of files of HDTV sports coverage. The four files vary in size being 7GB, 9GB, 11GB and 13GB. Wanting to maintain the best resolution possible I decided to split the files into chunks of 4-4.5GB in order to maximise the DVD space and file quality. The two smaller files were obviously split over two discs and the larger files over three discs.

I use a DVICO Fusion DVB-T Nano to capture the pictures and their software to edit the files into smaller chunks. Aside from a few dramas where the edit in/out times do not appear to corrspond with the saved file (i.e. I have had to add/subtract from the apparent time to capture all that I want) I have had no issues in splitting the files.

After this I have used HDTV2DVD to convert the *.tp files into DVD files for burning. Both of the smaller files (consisting of two smaller files each) have converted fine into a size of 4.35GB or marginally smaller. The larger files have proved more of a problem. With one of the files that I split into three smaller files I have been able to convert parts 2 and 3 (also to @ 4.35GB) but not part 1. With the other large one I have been able to convert only part 2 (also to @ 4.35GB). All the parts I have not been able to convert/compress to a size I require (@ 4.35GB) have been converted and compressed from 4GB-plus size down to 500-600MB. Obviously if I burn these to DVD to play on a standalone machine I will be looking at a very poor quality picture.

I am at a loss to understand why some sections are converting and compressing to vastly different sizes given they all started at a similar size before conversion.

    Can someone please assist?

Maybe try convert with something else than the all-in-one hdtv2dvd tool like a mpeg2 encoder with mpeg2 input support. You might have to use hdtv2mpeg2. Tmpgenc xpress, Mainconcept mpeg encoder, etc.

Or try another all-in-one tool like convertxtodvd.

Or configure ffmpeg (used in hdtv2dvd to convert to dvd mpeg2) manually or with the super gui.

Or contact the hdtv2dvd creator too see if he can fix the problems with hdtv2dvd.

Or the problems could be because of the editor...maybe try to cut with something else like videoredo.

Thanks. Will give them a go and see what transpires. I wouldn't mind but I am doing this as a favour for my brother in the UK.

By the way...like the avatar! Boom Boom Boom!!
