    Quick question folks:

I'm going abroad and I want to rip a bunch of my DVDs to avi, so I can watch them on the plane without having to schlep along the actual DVDs, etc.

But my question is, is there any way to keep the subtitles when creating avi's?

I've only created a few and usually you just get the picture and sound.

But maybe there's a way to keep the subtitle as well?

Can anyone recommend software that can accomplish this?

Not sure it's possible but I thought I'd at least ask.

I've got a couple of foreign films I'd really like to watch, but of course without the subtitles- I'd be a little lost.

Much obliged for any light anyone can shed on this subject.

    Cheers,

    icy

You should be able to use the DVD subtitles. Someone here should be able to supply the details. And this question would be better answered in the Subtitle forum. Moving you.

Whoops, didn't know there was a subtitle forum.

Thanks for moving me, hopefully someone out there can lend a hand.

No problem. I get lost around here occasionally. For starts, you might want to look at the sticky right above your post: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=267416

You might also to take a look at the next sticky down for using VirtualDub to make permanent subs. That may work good for your purpose, as you can use about any player, even if it won't handle the separate subtitle files.

To make things a little easier, you might look to a program like FairUse Wizard which may be able to convert your DVDs directly to Xvid and preserve the subtitles. Haven't tried this, but I do use FairUse quite a bit. You just need to rip the DVD to your hard drive and FairUse can go from there. I use DVD Fab Decrypter for that.
