How do you take off a movie from a dvd

I would like to take off a movie from a dvd for editing. How do i do this? If it can be done, would it rip it off and encode it in mpeg layer 2 (mpg2)

Well...

1. Click the Back button on your browser.
2. Click the Back button one more time.
3. Click on "DVD to DVDR" forum.
4. Read stickies.
5. Follow instructions therein.
6. Voila! You have now successfully ripped a movie off a disc!

You seem to know the terminology pretty well....rip, encode, mpeg layer 2.
My guess is you know more than you say you do.
