Anyone get the Pink Floyd: P*U*L*S*E DVD this week?
Afters years of missed released dates it was worth the wait.
Great 6-channel sound and good use of the surrounds. I think Gilmour had a hand in the mixing.
But as always the video producer sucked. Couldnt keep the camera still for over a few seconds at a time.
Who wants to see the back of the drummer's head when David is burning on his lead during "Comfortably Numb"...maybe 15 seconds of him during the whole solo.
After waiting years for the release it was a real treat for this Floyd fan. Disc 2 which contains the whole DSOTM album sounded almost as good as the SACD version. In Some ways as good. (the live remastered sound was good but use of the surrounds wasn't as good as the SACD.)
Now if they would only release "A Delicate Sound Of Thunder" concert which I think the band had more fun doing and the backup singer were much better on "The Great Gig In The Sky."
For a first I've seen - the Discs offered DD5.1 in both
448kbps
640kbps
I'm not sure the reason for that???
Anyway for $16 and change what a deal!
edit> Amazon has lowered the price to $14.99 w/ free shipping on $25. or more. Amazing offer.

I've watched the Laser Disc several times, and just picked up the DVD today. I can't wait to get the wrapper off and check it out! Unfortunately, I dis-assembled my sound system because I'm getting a new entertainment center in a few days.

I just... can't get excited about a DVD. Perhaps because I don't have a surround sound system.
Now if they wanted to release another CD that would have been different. -
the 640kbps bit rate is 7.1

Oh hell yeah!!
I've been waiting for this for a long time!!
Gonna pick one up this weekend 8)

I love it!!! Definately the best SACD i've bought yet!!
I wish they would do other albums by them in 5.1!!
Like staind did "14 shades of grey" on DVD AUDIO
Now the 2 albums they should have done in 5.1 were "Break the cycle" & "Chapter V"
Although i like "14 Shades of grey" the other two were way better and would have been killer in 5.1!!! -

My Denon receiver reads them both as 5.1 (6-channels only)
Also I've seen a few 6.1 using surround back which is a mono channel althought you can use two SB channel speakers on my system it's still 1 channel. I'm not familiar with a 7.1 movie ever. I guess you could 2 channel the surround back.
But it get's confusing as my surrounds are back by DTS and SACD/DVD-A design not on the sides from THX design. I also use full range all around , again by DTS, etc design.
So surround back or the 6th channel with me is back center.
But back to the two different 5.1 ...maybe a kind of super bit hyped DD as compensation for not having a DTS track???
I'll have to research this further. If indeed it's 7.1 it would be a first for me and my Denon is not catching it as it does with the rare 6.1.
Maybe Gilmour's site has some explanation. I'm really curious now.
Noahtuck, I agree it's definitely the best SACD in my collection too. I really wish the studios would put out more. -
you denon has to be 7.1 capable , like the 2105 and up i think
but maybe the dvd is mislabelled or it is something else"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Well, I got the info. It is true Dolby Digital 5.1 Only a higher bit rate that effects the sound a tad but I do hear a very slight difference from switching back and forth while listening.
Anyway the scoop is it depends on the DVD player if you can access the 640kbps or not.
Here's the deal
"It depends on the DVD player. ALL Dolby Digital receivers and outboard decoders are mandated to decodes DD bitrates up to 640 kb/s.
D-VHS uses DD 576kb/s. The X-Box and HD-DVDs formats often output DD 640kb/s.
But as mentioned previously, given the DD specs for DVD were set at a max of 448kb/s, there is no official requirement for *any* DVD player to decode or even pass through anything past the DVD spec, although many still do so."
So I guess I'm lucky...actually most have been able to use the 640. Some complaind their Pioneer Elites would not. So just luck of the player. But it is def DD 5.1.
I appreciate the info and inspiration to spend a couple hours to finally find out the deal, BJ_M.
Thanks,

Pulse is probably the only music DVD I can get excited about. I've had the VHS tape since it came out but it's getting worn. I wanted the remastered footage and sound from a DVD and had been waiting for a long time for this release.
However does anyone else think it odd that Syd Barrett died at the same time this was released? It's a bit of a spooky coincidence.FB-DIMM are the real cause of global warming -
And David Gilmour has a new CD out too. It's his first one in about 20 years!
-
On the other hand I had the pleasure of seeing them live during the Division Bell tour. Good CD and a good show.

Anyway being somewhat of a musician I love these events being able to see my favorite guitar players perform live.
I guess one really needs a decent surround 5.1 setup to enjoy the full experience. Adding the visual to the music is a treat (most times) -
I bought Gilmour's new album. It's not really that great to me but probably its just because its very different from Division Bell which I loved. Pulse is definitely on my wish list.
His acoustic DVD is really great too.
