This is probably a dumb question but I'm curious nevertheless. Can anyone tell me why Windows Explorer (Win2K) in the left pane tree display identifies my plextor 708 as a Compact Disk but identifies the 760 as Removable Media?

    Because Windows is stupid.

Most likely it has to do with the age of win2k. Some part of the identification process windows uses can identify the 708 as a cdrom drive and either cant identify the 760 or the response from the 760 causes windows to believe it is removable media. I would expect that if you were running XP you wouldn't see that. Regardless of how it is identified, it shouldn't affect the drives at all. XP often labels drives in stupid ways also, and there are reg tweaks/hacks to change the titles(names) to be whatever you want them to be.
