I recently bought the NEC ND-3550 from Newegg. Until now I have been using the LG 4160 dual layer DVD burner. For backing up DL blanks I used dvd decrypter and imageburn. With the LG I had no coasters ever with the Verbatim DL inkjet printable blanks.

Today I tried burning 3 DVD+R DL with Imageburn and all 3 turned into coasters. Two failed right after the burn, one did not fail but was unreadble.

I also updated the imageburn to the newest version (along with dvd decrypter).

I purchased the NEC based on the high reviews off newegg. Is the problem with the imageburn or is this drive a dud? I will perhaps return it and get a Plextor or something similar. But burning Verbatim DVD+R DL blanks is a bit expensive for troubleshooting.

    Any advice is appreciated.

I burn Verbatim +R DL w/ an LG 4166d using the same programs - it does this almost flawlessly.

  3. I updated the firmware to the 1.Y6 available on the web, set the booksetting to DVD-ROM for +R media and haven't had a coaster yet. Have burned Verbatim and even the cheap Matrix burned flawlessly.

I have same drive with Verbatim DVD+R DL and have not had a failure yet in over 100 burns with ImgBurn. Make sure you have the updated driver as mine came with an earlier version, current is 1.06, also I would recommend testing your ISO with one of the image drive programs like nero before attemting to burn.

Verbatim are indeed more expensive, but cheaper media is too risky in my opinion with DL disk at current costs.

If all this fails, then you likely got a bad drive.
