looking 4 a TOOL that shows and deinstalls CODECs

i am having a serious codec problems here...
can anybody tell me if there is a tool out there, which can deinstall old codecs and show me exactly what is installed? how many codes for the same format should/can be installed?

In the best of worlds, you'd only have one codec for each format.

holy hell (pardon my language) yea, you may as well reformat...and when you reinstall, do NOT install a codec pack..........those things cause nothing but trouble, only locate the codecs you need......

I'd have a look at Filmerit too, safer to use than codec sniper and Dxman.

IMO and I'm sure others will agree.... There's no such thing as a good codec pack. Install individual codecs on a need only basis.

yep, there are some codec packs out there, that by default cause problems and should only be used by people that know what they are doing........on the other hand, people that know what they are doing would just install the codecs individually...so no, there isnt such a thing as a good codec pack.....(i still remember back in the days i used to run the angel potion codec pack....good grief, what was i thinking?????)

I agree. And not only install the codec but force the OS to use that codec high up in the priority list.

I have similar problem and I was wondering if someone can help me resolve this issue. I have Nero 6.6 Enterprise Edition installed and I think it also installed two codec files NeAudio.ax and NeVideo.ax in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter directory. I also have Pinnacle Sudio 9.4 installed. What is happening is when I try to open a file with AC3 sound in Pinnacle Studio, it simply crashes with Nero Audio Codec enabled. If I rename the NeAudio.ax to something else, then the file opens fine.

I have checked the file with Gspot and it tells me there are 6 audio codecs installed for that file including Nero Digital Audio Decoder. When I try to render the file, it intercepts the crash and displays the message pointing to Nero Audio Decoder being the culprit.

Is there a way I can fix this situation without compromising Nero's functionality ?

You could try changing the "Merit" of the Nero filter to something lower and promoting the merit of the one favored by Pinnacle. Filmerit or Radlight Filter Manager are a couple of examples of programs that let you change the merits of filters.

I have tried that but didn't work. I used RadLight Filter Manager and changed the merit of Nero Codec to "DO NOT USE" and to 4 of the Pinnacle AC3 decoders/encoders to "PREFERRED +1" but no effect. Pinnacle would still crash trying to open those files.

Anything else I can do ?

I use AVIcodec to disable cetain codecs so my program doesn't use them.
Its quick and you can just as quickly enable the codecs.
