does anyone know if it is risky to burn at 16 speed with LG 4167 dvdburner and using media Verbatim DVD-R 16 x? until now burning went well and played well on 2 dvd players, however not sure if other people will have problems playing the dvd.

To be safe you might want to burn at 12x instead of 16x

I have burned numerous 16X Verbatim DVD-R's (with the Taiyo Yuden dye) at 16X all the time. Never had a problem. Plays back fine in my PC, DVD Player and PS2.

Opinions and experiences vary. Some folks say to burn at 1/2 rated speed of either the media or drive (whichever is lower). Some say never more than 4x speed, some even lower. I have not had problem at any speed and I have a diverse array of equipment. However, I usually burn DVD-R at no more than 4x speed, just to be safe, when making promotional DVDs because clients may be playing them in old or intolerant equipment.

If you are not doing distribution work then I'd say go at 8x or 12x if it works in your equipment.

I agree with FulciLives that this media on most burners does slightly better at 12x. Unfortunately that is not an option on the LG GSA 4167B. It has no 12x strategy for any DVD-R media. I have tried 16x and 8x on that drive with this media and again - get slightly better results with 8x. For this reason I normally avoid using 16x DVD-R on this drive. Verbatim DVD+R (MCC004) does exceptionally well on this drive at 12x or 16x. Funny why LG supports 12x write for +R but not -R on this drive. Maybe future firmware will address this.

EDIT: I just realized you are from Austria so I am not sure my post would be correct for you. I was referring to what we get here in the US (MCC 03RG20 made by either CMC or Prodisc) as branded Verbatim. I think in Europe you may get MCC 03RG20 of the Moser Baer variety which I have no experience with.

MCC03RG20 is fine at 16x on my 4163B, so I'd imagine it'd be about the same with the 4167B (same write strategy).

hey guys, woww, thanks for all the quick responces!!!
what i am actually surprised is that when burning a 1,5 hour film to dvd 16 x versus 8 x it takes 5,5 minutes versus 8 minutes with 8 x which is not much difference. I would have thought it to be double as fast, but i guess that has to do with the lead-in burning time and finalization time, or?
