I recently took a two week trip to Europe, and I brought along my laptop and a portable 160GB hard drive, on which I copied about 5 or 6 full length DVD movies (non-copyrighted of course)...the DVD movies were burned from the disc using DVDfab, which is similar to a previous app I used to use called DVD Decrypter...the resulting rip consisted of exactly what appeared on the disc...a folder named whatever the DVD disc was named, within which there was an Audio_TS folder and a Video_TS folder...the total file size of one of these rips was in the range of 4-8 gigabytes (depending on whether the original disc was a single or dual layer disc...
The problem is that with a file size this large, there is only a limited quantity of movies I can store on a hard drive...even one that's 160GB in size...I wanted to hear some suggestions that people might have in which I convert the DVDfab ripped disc to some sort of single file format, such as DivX, MPEG-4, etc...
Can someone let me know what the best way would be to convert a bunch of Video_TS rips to some format in which I would both compress the ripped disc enough to maximize my available storage, while at the same time keeping the overall quality of the file near to DVD quality?
Thanks!

oldandintheway...I would prefer not to stay in the DVD format, simply due to the fact that the resulting file size would be far larger than what I am looking to achieve. I am aiming to achieve the best quality possible, while at the same time reducing the total file size to somewhere in the 500MB - 1.8GB range (obviously depending on the length of the original disc of course)...
Abond...do you have any idea what the resulting file size would be (roughly) if I used AutoGK with XviD and mp3 audio on a ripped DVD that was originally 4.5GB? What about for a dual-layer disc that was originally 7.8GB?

I've tried using AutoGK on several DVD rips I've made, and I was able to do so without too much of an incident, with a couple of exceptions...
First, several of the DVD movies I tried to convert came up in AutoGK as not having an audio track...I followed the instruction in the AutoGK manual which simply says to select the first of the .VOB files and it would automaticaly recognize the rest and the find result would be a compiled version of all VOB files in the folder...two out of about twelve discs resulted in such an error...
Second, two out of the approximate twelve discs I attempted to add to the queue in AutoGK popped-up showing that the compiled VOB files would result in a movie file that was way way too long...long that I know the movie in question is...one said the resulting file would be 4 hours and another said it would be 14 hours...
If anyone can offer any suggestions as to why I am getting these errors, I would be grateful, as my current success/failure ratio is not reasonable if I wanted to convert dozens of DVD movies...
Thanks!
