I have been trying to extract specific title sets using MTR 2.6.6 and I'm having problems. While I am having no problems with main feature extraction. I follow the manual for title-chapter extraction by first selecting that extraction type, then setting the start chpt (SChpt) and then end chpt (EChpt) then I click go to extract. The extraction occurs but it won't allow playback. Can anyone help me with what I may be doing wrong or something I need to do in order to accomplish this ... any help is greatly appreciated!

I really like using yade X for chapter extraction since you get a preview of the exact scene you want.

To do it in MTR though choose the Mode tab - Title - Chapter Extraction - and select the chapter you want - then hit GO!

When doing this I end up with a .vob file that can be played in VLC/MPlayer.
If it's a newer DVD with ARccOS you probably need the version 3 beta of MTR.

I do exactly what you do except I get a single .vob file that won't play back. I get a prompt that states "There was a problem opening the media. The media type is not supported." Any suggestions on how to overcome this problem?

Does it happen on every single DVD you try (try it on an older one, released in 2000)? Does the vob open in Mpeg Streamclip? If it doesn't work in MPlayer what does the error say?

That's what I got from MPlayer on my vob that works.

Which DVD and which chapter are you trying to extract (I'll see if I have it to try)?

Yes it has happened to ever disc I have ever tried it with. To be more specific I'm trying to rip adult titles. I just tried the movie Friday, as you suggested doing a move before 2000, and I got the same results.

Now I'm not even close to a computer expert so I don't really know what a Mpeg streamline is or what the Mplayer is? So since Quicktime plays Mpeg files I thought that was what you were talking abot and tried to get it to play back in the Quicktime application ... it didn't work ... it gives me a "Error opening movie ... The movie could not be opened" prompt. Now I assumed that the Mplayer is the Mac Application DVD Player ... when I tried to open the file in this appapplication it gave me a "There was a problem opening the media ... The media type is not supported" prompt.

Do I need a different MTR application? I'm using version 2.6.6 ... maybe I have to change some of the preferences?

QuickTime Player standard will not playback VOB files, or any file with MPEG-2 video. If you install the $20 MPEG-2 component, then QuickTime Player will play the video, but the audio depends on which format: MP2 - audio; AC3 - no audio.

MPlayer - movie player for MPEG-1/2/4, VOB & other formats, available as CLI (link) and GUI (link) app
Apple DVD Player only plays from correctly authored VIDEO_TS folders
VLC media player - movie player for MPEG-1/2/4, VOB & more
MPEG Streamclip - convertor/editor for MPEG & transport streams (needs MPEG-2 component for VOBs; does full screen placyback)

I just want to be able to play specific chapter extracted files in my Apple DVD Player. I can play main feature extracted file in my Apple DVD Player, but can't get it to play back when I do title set extraction.

Sizzle can author your single VOB file to a VIDEO_TS folder with IFO, BUP and VOB files. So do Toast and ffmpegX and I'm sure several other apps. I'd recommend Toast for simplicity, if you can use that.

So you saying buy Toast and that will end my problem. I' m new to this extractiong stuff and what not so I don't always know the lingo. I know Toast is software that allows you to take Video_TS files and put them on to a DVD ... am I correct? That is ultimately what I'm trying to do ... take my extracted files main feature or chapter specific and put it on to a DVD R for play back in conventional DVD player.

Here's how I would process the extracted VOB file.
Open Toast, set it to DVD-Video, with reencode to 'never'. Drop the VOB into the Toast window. Burn to disc, or save as disc image (in order to test it in Apple DVD Player first). Your VOB will be re-multiplexed by Toast in the authoring process. You can open the disc image file by double-clicking. Toast will then allow you to mount the disc image as a virtual DVD on the desktop. You'll see a familiar VIDEO_TS folder in there. When launching Apple DVD Player, it will notice the presence of the mounted DVD volume and starts playing. The same disc image can be used to burn, without going through the authoring process again.
