The only real interest I have in Blue Ray is for data storage. Until the recordables drop to $5 or less it is a non entity to me.

I am perfectly happy with normal DVD resolution- even on my big screen. I'm betting most people feel the same way.

Obviously a $1000 movie player isn't targeted at the general public. But if for some reason, you have to have a Blue Ray player, wouldn't it make more sense to buy a PS3 at around half the price in November?

Why is the blueray $1000 vs hddvd $500 vs ps3 w/blueray $599 (and plays games)? They mostly do the same things and I am also waiting on a recordable format, sucks having hdtv pvr from dishnetwork and not being able to save to disk. I was going to go with DVHS but I didn't see any hdmi or component inputs on it, and dishnetwork doesn't have firewall so the firewall option is not available. although I did here that they are in negotiations to allow you to offload the pvr to an external hard drive for later playback until blueray or hddvd recorders come out.

If you spend $1000 for a burner and $1000 for a set top player and you find your discs burnt do not play in the set top I am sorry I just have to laugh at your losses. You spent $2000 on first generation technology that by 3QTR07 will be half the cost and 2 or 3 generations ahead.

In any case, my DVD's from my burner rarely get used in set tops. I use my burner mostly for data applications.
