    Recently downloaded a fansub and cannot play with with DivX Player, Windows Media Player, or Core Media Player. What codec do I need to download to enable playback? And while we're at it, what exactly makes this code different (and thus, unplayable by default) from other compression codes?

    It's different just like every other different codec is different. You need an h.264 codec. Try ffdshow.
