  3. I can't give you any info other than I have the 500GB version for a week now and used about half of it and works great. No problems.

Office Depot is selling the 500GB essential external for $239.99 after $30 rebate.

You can find user reviews at amazon.com and a video review at cnet.com

I own 4 SATA hard drives. 3 are Western Digital, and one is Seagate. Never had a problem with any of my WD drives. Had one WD for 2 yers now and the other two for abount 6 months.

  6. it depends....I have a friend who owns an external WD and he changed that probably 3 times in the warranty period.

a hdd could fail anytime, especially when you use it a lot, like encoding.

never had a hdd problem until a started doing encoding, then my WD failed after 1yr, and after that another 2 in the warranty period (they were rebuild junkies..... )

the ideea is that you always should back-up a hdd, don't matter who made it.
